Volleyball Defeated By University of Iowa In Four Sets

The Friars will face Evansville on Sept. 1 at 4:00p.m. (ET).

San Juan, Puerto Rico – The Providence College volleyball team opened its 2024 season at the Puerto Rico Clásico on Saturday, Aug. 31 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Friars fell to Iowa in four sets (3-1).

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Iowa earned a 25-23 victory in the first set.
  • The Friars got out to a 4-1.
  • The Friars maintained a three-point lead at 12-9.
  • The Hawks went on a 4-0 run to claim a 13-12 advantage.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth to reach a score of 21-21, forcing Iowa to take a time out.
  • The Friars and Hawks exchanged kills but Iowa was able to close out the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.  
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Iowa won the second set, 25-19.
  • Iowa jumped out to a 9-2 lead to start the second set.
  • The Friars began to chip away to cut Iowa's lead to 9-5.
  • The Friars scored five points coming out of their time out to close the gap to 19-13.
  • Providence went on a 3-0 run to bring the score to 20-16, forcing Iowa to call a timeout.
  • Iowa maintained its lead the remainder of the set to win 25-19.  
  • Shaliyah Rhoden led the Friars with seven kills through the first two sets.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took the third set, 25-21, to force fourth set.
  • The Hawks got out to quick 3-1 start.
  • The Friars went on a 7-3 run to make it 8-6.
  • The Friars used a 7-0 scoring run to take a 18-10 lead, forcing the Hawks to call a timeout.
  • Iowa fought back to cut the score to 20-18.
  • The Friars were able to hold off the Hawks and win set three, 25-21.
  • Jiji Lykins led the Friars with 17 digs through the first three sets.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Iowa won the fourth set, 25-19to take the match. 
  • The Hawks go led a 4-2 to start set four.
  • The Friars fought back to tie the set, 11-11.
  • Iowa answered with a 7-1 run to go up 18-12 and forced Providence to call a timeout.
  • Iowa held on to win the set, 25-19, and win the match, 3-1.
MATCH NOTES:
  • Rhoden and Sophia Adkins led the Friars with 10 kills.
  • Lykins led Providence in digs, with 23.
  • The Friars notched 41 kills, 57 digs and 10 blocks.

WHATS NEXT: The volleyball team plays tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. (ET) against University of Evansville to close out the tournament.
