PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team will begin its 2024 season at the Puerto Rico Clásico in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Friars open the tournament on Aug. 31 against University of Iowa at 1:00 p.m. (ET). On Sept.1, Providence will play a single match against Evansville University at 3:00 p.m. (ET).

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… Providence finished the 2023 season with a 9-21 overall record and a 3-15 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars are returning 13 players from last year's roster and have added four newcomers. Highlighting the returning core are sophomores
Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) and
Miller McDonald (Dallas, Texas) and seniors
Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) and
Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas). Berry, who was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team, led the Friars in solo blocks (28), was second on the team in total blocks (97) and ranked fourth in kills (159). McDonald played in all 30 matches for the Friars and ranked first on the team in assists (640). Grant started in all 30 matches last season and led the Friars in blocks (106) and was third on the team in kills (209). Rhoden played in all 30 matches and ranked first on the team in kills (337) and registered double-digit kills in 18 matches.

SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES… The Hawkeyes finished their 2023 season with an 8-24 overall record and a 0-20 mark in the Big Ten Conference. Iowa has two key players returning, Michelle Urquhart and Gabby Deery. Urquhart appeared in 24 matches and posted 44 kills, 39 service aces and 170 digs. Deery appeared in 23 matches and recorded 94 kills, 24 digs and 23 blocks.
SCOUTING THE ACES… The Aces finished their 2023 season with an 11-19 overall record and a 6-12 record in the Missouri Valley Conference. Two key players for Evansville return for the 2024 season, including Guilia Cardona, who tallied 593 kills and Kora Ruff, who had 1,039 assists.
WHAT'S NEXT… The Providence College volleyball team will be on the road again next weekend for the Rhode Island Challenge Tournament in Smithfield, R.I. The Friars will face off against Brown University on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. Providence will then play the University of Rhode Island on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10:00 a.m. and Bryant University at 7:00 p.m.
