Field Hockey Opens 2024 Campaign With Boston University And Bryant

Friars will host BU at Lennon Family Field on Friday, Aug. 30 at 3:00 p.m. before traveling to Bryant on Sunday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will open the 2024 season with a pair of games against Boston University and Bryant University. The Friars will host BU at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. on Friday, Aug. 30 at 3:00 p.m. The squad will close out opening weekend against Bryant in Smithfield, R.I. on Sunday, Sept. 1 at Noon.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE (0-0):
• Providence College posted a 10-8 overall record in 2023, including a 3-4 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.
• The Friars return 17 players from the 2023 campaign, including eight players who have substantial experience in the starting line-up.
• Of the 25 active players on the roster, the team is comprised of five graduate students, six seniors, two juniors, seven sophomores and five freshmen.
• As a team, the Friars scored 44 goals last year. It marked the most goals in a season since 2014 (66).
• The Friars return four players who registered double digits in the points column last season, including their top two scorers in graduate student Ally DeCoste and senior Celia Preveza. DeCoste recorded 21 points on nine goals and three assists, while Preveza notched 16 points on six goals and four assists.
• DeCoste ranks 50th on the Friars' all-time scoring list (34 points) and 40th all-time in goals scored (14).
Bella DelNegro was the Friars' assist leader last season (seven) and recorded 11 points overall for the offense (2g/7a).
• Graduate student Asia Porter has been the starting goalkeeper during each of the last three seasons. Last season, she helped backstop the Friars to a total of six shutout victories. She logged 1,093 minutes in the cage and posted a 1.59 goals against average and 0.736 save percentage.
• The Friars picked up two graduate transfers during the off-season, including Caroline Guden (Stanford) and Ally Kennedy (Vermont), both of whom are Massachusetts natives. Guden is from Waltham, Mass. and is the niece of former Friar great, Cathy Guden '94, who was a three-time All-American for the Friars. Kennedy is from Watertown, Mass. and is the sister of current Providence assistant coach Kourtney Kennedy
• Sophomore Florencia Talarico was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Aug. 27. She is one of three sophomores to earn a spot on the preseason team. Last year, Talarico claimed BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades. She became the third freshman in program history to earn the league's top rookie honor, joining Manon van Weezel (2017) and Paula Wagoner (1994).
• Talarico finished her freshman season with 10 points on two goals and six assists. She ranked second on the team in assists.
• On Aug. 29, it was announced that Talarico and Macie Pennisi were named to the 2024 NFHCA Division I Watchlist. The sophomore duo was among 171 student-athletes named to the watchlist, representing 55 NCAA Division I institutions. Student-athletes who were eligible for the initial watchlist must have previously been recognized for their field hockey abilities within the past two years (All-Region, All-American, All-Conference, Senior Nexus Championship selection, NCAA All-Tournament Team and/or U.S. National or International Team roster).
 
SCOUTING BOSTON UNIVERSITY (0-0):
• The Terriers compiled an 8-10 overall record last season, including a 3-3 mark in the Patriot League.
• Boston University returns eight members of its starting line-up from 2023.
• BU returns three players who scored 10+ points in the scoring column a season ago, including its top goal scorer, Caroline O'Brien. O'Brien tallied 18 points on nine goals in 2023. Payton Anderson (12 points) and Nicole Lauro (10 points) also tallied double figures in the points column last season.
• The Terriers also welcome back Kate Thomason, who started all 18 games in goal for the squad in 2023. She played 1,100 minutes and recorded a 2.51 goals against average and a 0.683 save percentage.
 
SCOUTING BRYANT UNIVERSITY (0-0):
• The Bulldogs will host Fairfield University in their season opener on Friday, Aug. 30 before taking on the Friars in Smithfield on Sunday, Sept. 1.
• Bryant finished the 2023 season with an 8-9 overall record. The Bulldogs' 13 victories over the last two seasons exceed the number of wins for the program during the previous five years combined.
• Bryant welcomes 11 new student-athletes to the roster for the 2024 season.
• The Bulldogs lost three of their four double-digit scorers from a season ago, including Brittany Gouws (18 points), Taryn Rauff (18 points) and Olivia Clarke (10 points).
• Bryant's top-returning scorer from last season is Natalie Griffin, who notched 11 points on three goals and five assists.
• The Bulldogs also will need to replace their starting goalkeeper from last season. Dieneke Hes started 12 games for Bryant and recorded a 2.48 goals against average and 0.677 save percentage.
