VILLANOVA, Pa.– The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams competed in the second day of the BIG EAST Championship in Villanova, Pa., at the Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova University on Friday, May 10.The Friars finished the day with two titles as
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) captured the 5,000-meter race and
Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) won the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
On day two of competition, May won the 5,000-meter title in a BIG EAST record time of 15:26.60. The previous record was set by former Friar Emily Sisson (15:40.64) in 2015. May's time also was second fastest all-time in outdoors at PC, trailing only Kim Smith's program record of 15:09.72, which was set in 2004.
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) followed in sixth place with a time of 16:36.92.
Annabelle Eastman (Melbourne, Australia) placed seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:45.22.
Claire Kelly (Cornwall on the Hudson, N.Y.) followed in a time of 11:03.71 for 10
th place.
Four Friar women qualified for the 1,500-meter finals. In heat one,
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) placed first with a time of 4:26.04. Following Flockhart was
Cara Laverty (Kerry, Ireland) in second (4:26.67),
Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand) placed third (4:26.84) and
Kiera Hall (Christchurch, New Zealand) in fourth (4:29.55).
Jill Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.) ran a personal best of 56.34 in the 400 meters to qualify on time for the finals.
Nicole Borowiec (Denville, N.J.) qualified on time for the 100-meter hurdle finals with a 14.52 finish.
Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) ran a 2:10.38 in the 800 meters to finish first in her heat and automatically qualify for the finals.
On the men's side, Thygesen won the 3,000-meter steeplechase title in a time of 8:50.07.
Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) ran a 14:30.81 to finish 11
th in the 5,000 meters.
Brett Lehman (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) automatically qualified for the 400-meter finals after placing first in his heat with a time of 47.40.
The Friars return to action tomorrow, May 11, for the final day of BIG EAST competition. Below is the schedule for tomorrow's events.
