Women’s DMR Team Crowned BIG EAST Champions

At the end of the first day of competition, the Friars had four top-three finishes and many qualifiers for tomorrow’s finals.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Providence College men's and women's track teams competed in the first day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 23 at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Indoor Track and Field Facility in Chicago, Ill. At the end of the first day of competition, the Friars had four top-three finishes and many qualifiers for tomorrow's finals.

On the women's side, the team comprised of Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand), Jill Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.), Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) and Kimberley May  (Auckland New Zealand) won the distance medley relay with a time of 11:08.88.

Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) finished runner-up in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:21.46. Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) placed third with a time of 16:32.42. 

Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) and Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) both automatically qualified for the mile finals tomorrow. Flockhart won her heat in a time of 4:44.31 and Laverty finished fourth in her heat with 4:47.28. The finals for the mile are set for 12:30 p.m. ET tomorrow.
 
In the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries, Nicole Borowiec (Denville, N.J.) ran a time of 8.75 to qualify for the finals that will start at 12:50 p.m. tomorrow.

Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) and Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) both automatically qualified for the 800-meter finals tomorrow. Alex O'Neill won her heat in a time of 2:09.87 and Maeve O'Neill finished second in her heat with a time of 2:08.03. The finals for the 800 meters are set for 1:50 p.m. ET tomorrow.
 
On the men's side, the team of Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia), Brett Lehman (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.), Josh Lewin (West Chester, Pa.) and DJ Principe (Johnston, R.I.) placed second overall in the distance medley with a time of 9:41.47.

Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) earned the bronze medal in the 5,000-meters with a time of 14:06.85. Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and Shane Coffey (Naas, Ireland) followed in fifth (14:22.53) and sixth (14:30.53), respectively. 

Two friars qualified for the mile finals tomorrow. Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand) ran a 4:11.07, followed by Jacob Hefele (Danbury, Conn.) with a personal record time of 4:11.38. The finals for the mile are set for 12:40 p.m. ET tomorrow.
 
The second day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships will begin at 12:00 p.m. ET tomorrow and will be live streamed on FloSports.
