Five different Friars found the back of the cage in the victory.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated Merrimack, 5-0, on Sunday, Sept. 24. The team improved to 5-4 overall, including a 5-1 mark at home on Lennon Family Field. The Warriors dropped to 0-8 on the year.
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars scored two goals inside the first 10 minutes of play to take a 2-0 lead.
• Macie Pennisi struck first at the 4:43 mark as she gathered an initial feed from Celia Preveza. Preveza was credited with the assist.
• Bridget Everett followed with her first career goal at 9:47. She picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and lifted it passed the goalkeeper.
• The Friars scored on both of their shot attempts in the quarter. Merrimack took one shot and led 2-0 in offensive corners.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence extended its lead to 3-0 as Hannah McKenney registered her first career goal as a Friar. She was the beneficiary of a loose ball at the right post.
• The Friars outshot the Warriors 5-2 in the second quarter and both teams were awarded one penalty corner each.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars tacked on two more goals in the third for a 5-0 advantage on the scoreboard.
• Preveza scored her third goal of the season at the 35:11 mark. Pennisi drove the baseline and sent a nice feed to the middle of the circle, which Preveza one-timed into the back of the cage.
• The final goal of the afternoon was scored by Ally DeCoste. Martina sent a crossing pass through the circle and DeCoste's diving effort at the left resulted in her second goal of the season.
• Providence outshot Merrimack 8-0 in the quarter and held a 1-0 edge in corners.
4TH QUARTER:
• The fourth quarter was scoreless as Providence held on for the 5-0 victory.
• Providence goalkeeper Zoe Onken relieved Asia Porter with 7:53 remaining in the game and made the first two saves of her collegiate caeer.
• Merrimack held the advantage in corners during the final quarter (2-0), while Providence led in shots (3-2).
HIGHLIGHTS: NOTES:
• The Friars scored five goals in a game for the third time this season.
• For the game, Providence led in shots (18-5) and shots on goal (13-2). Merrimack held a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners.
• The Friars recorded their fourth shutout of the season.
• Providence improved to 5-4 overall on the season, including a 5-1 mark at home on Lennon Family Field.
• Providence has won five of its last seven games.

• The Friars will host Old Dominion in BIG EAST play on Friday, Sept. 29. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Lennon Family Field.
