Bryce Hopkins Named A Top-10 Candidate For The Karl Malone Power Forward Of The Year Award

The sophomore forward/guard leads the Friars in scoring and rebounding.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced today (February 9) that sophomore Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.) has been named a Top-10 Candidate for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award. The winner of the award earns a spot on the "Naismith Starting Five". Hopkins has helped the No. 20/17 Friars to an 18-6 mark and a 10-3 record in BIG EAST play. He has been named to the Naismith Player of the Year Midseason Team (Feb. 9) and to the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Award Midseason Watch List (Jan. 19).
 
Hopkins leads the Friars in scoring (16.1 ppg), rebounding (9.2 rbg), and double-doubles (nine). He ranks fifth in scoring and second in rebounding amongst BIG EAST players in overall action. In BIG EAST action, he is third in scoring (17.2 ppg) and second in rebounding (10.1 rpg). He has posted a team-best nine double-doubles, including a 29-point, 23-rebound, three steal effort in a double-overtime win over Marquette (103-98) on December 20. He played 47 of the 50 minutes in the game. Hopkins' 20-20 game was the 34th in program history and the first since Jamine Peterson accomplished the feat when he posted 29 points and 20 rebounds versus Rutgers on Jan. 9, 2010. It also was the first in the BIG EAST play since Angel Delgado (21 pts, 20 rbs.) of Seton Hall did it on January 22, 2017. Additionally, Hopkins was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Dec. 26 and has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll four times (Dec. 12, Dec. 19, Jan. 9, and Jan, 23).
 
This is Hopkins' first season with the Friars after transferring from Kentucky last spring.
 
The award was named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor is in its ninth year recognizes the top power forward in Division I men's college basketball.
 
In March, five finalists will be presented to Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The selection committee for the Karl Malone Award is composed of top men's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
 
The winner of the 2023 Karl Malone Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
