EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Providence College men's and women's swimming & diving programs competed on the fourth and final day of the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championship on Feb. 25 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
Will Layden won his second BIG EAST individual title of the championship, claiming first place in the 100-yard freestyle (44.32). On Wednesday, he captured his first title of the week in the 50-yard freestyle. Layden becomes the first men's swimmer in program history to win multiple BIG EAST titles and his victory today marked the fourth BIG EAST title in the last three years for the men's team. There have been five BIG EAST titles for the Friar men's program overall.
Horace Bowden '89 was the program's first BIG EAST Champion, having won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 1986. During the 2021 championship,
Justin Viotto '22 won the 200-yared butterfly and
Kevin Hood '23 captured the league crown in the 100-yard breaststroke
Seth Brodnick finished first in his heat in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:39.03 and placed seventh overall to reach the podium for the Friars.
Hood also reached the podium on the final day of competition as he placed eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.63.
The men's team closed the 2023 championship with a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:02.11). The team featured
Alex Beauchene,
Brian Cantin,
Ryan Sharp and Layden.
On the women's side,
Sally Alrutz highlighted the Friars' day in the 200-yard backstroke. She jumped from 14
th-place in the prelims to ninth-place in the finals with a time of 2:00.33, improving her time by 3.55 seconds.
The ladies finished off the championship with a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:28.25.
