Eight newcomers will join the six returnees in the lineup.

Last season, the Providence College men's basketball team made their deepest run in the NCAA Tournament since 1997, earning a trip to the Sweet Sixteen. In a historic season for the Friars, the team earned its highest seed all-time in the tournament (No. 4) and posted the second most wins in a single season in program history (27). The Friars captured the program's first BIG EAST Regular Season title with a 14-3 mark in conference play (27-6 overall). Head Coach Ed Cooley was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year and became the first Friar coach to win the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year Award.

The Friars will welcome eight newcomers to the lineup for the 2022-23 season, in addition to the team's six returning players. Six players departed in last year's graduating class, including all five starters - Al Durham (Lilburn, Ga.), Noah Horchler (Melbourne, Fla.), Justin Minaya (Harrington Park, N.J.), A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.), and Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.).

Graduate student Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) headlines the backcourt for the Friars this season. Bynum was a breakout star for the team last season, earning All-BIG EAST Second Team honors and the BIG EAST Sixth Man Award. He finished third on the team in scoring, averaging 12.2 points per game.  He also led the team in assists (117), and was the team's best three-point shooter (41.3 percent).  Junior Alyn Breed (Powder Springs, Ga.) also returns to the backcourt. He averaged 3.2 points per game and saw action in all 33 games. Sophomore guards Luke Fonts (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Kieran O'Haire (Menands, N.Y.) will each begin their second year as walk-ons for the Friars.

Four transfers will help bolster the backcourt for the Friars - sophomore Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.), graduate student Noah Locke (Baltimore, Md.), sophomore Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.) and redshirt freshman Corey Floyd, Jr. (Franklin, N.J.). Carter made an immediate impact as a freshman at South Carolina last season, averaging 9.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. He notched double figures in 13 games.  Carter earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors. Locke joins the Friars for his fifth college season, after playing at Louisville last season and Florida for the previous three. He is considered one of the best three-point shooters in the nation and has averaged 10.0 points per game during his career. He has shot 38.7 percent (285-737) behind the arc in his career.  Hopkins is a combo guard/forward.  At 6-7, 220 pounds, he can handle the ball and play down low.  He was a coveted prospect in 2021 and committed to Kentucky, where he made 28 appearances in his freshman campaign and recorded a career-high 13 points versus LSU. Coming out of Fenwick High School, Hopkins was ranked No. 33 in the nation by ESPN.  Floyd, who had a redshirt season at Connecticut in 2021-22, was a four-star recruit and was ranked No. 93 in the nation by 247Sports. He is set to play his first collegiate minutes with the Friars this season.

Freshmen Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.), Quante Berry (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Scott Morozov (Toronto, Ontario) each enter their first season of college basketball with the Friars. Pierre, a 6-2 guard, was the No. 1 recruit from New Jersey in 2022 according to 247Sports. Pierre concluded his high school career at Long Island Lutheran High School with a triple-double on senior night, registering 17 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. Berry, a 6-4 guard, averaged 16.0 points and 6.0 rebounds at Winston-Salem Christian School last season and was ranked as a four-star recruit by ESPN. Morozov, a 6-6 forward, is set to walk on this season after graduating from Hoosac School.

With several players departing, the Friars will look to redshirt senior Ed Croswell (Philadelphia, Pa.) to help lead the frontcourt this season. Last season, he averaged 5.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while providing an integral spark off the bench in several games. Croswell led the Friars to victory over Rhode Island last season with a double-double, 13 points and 15 rebounds. He is joined by redshirt freshman Rafael Castro (Dover, N.J.), who did not play last season. In his junior year at Dover High School, Castro averaged 20.3 points, 16.3 rebounds, and nearly five blocks per game.

Croswell and Castro are joined by two transfers, graduate student Clifton Moore (Ambler, Pa.) and Hopkins. Moore will play his fifth collegiate season this year, after playing two seasons at La Salle and his first two seasons at Indiana. He has averaged 7.2 points and 4.0 rebounds in his career. For the 2022 season, he averaged a career-best 12.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game.  Moore posted a career-high 26 points versus Fordham last season

The Friars are hoping to have another banner season in 2022-23, as they are set to defend their BIG EAST Regular Season title and make another deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Head Coach Ed Cooley boasts yet another deep roster, with a combination of experienced veterans and promising young players.
