SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Providence College volleyball team fell to Seton Hall in five sets on Saturday, Sept. 24 in South Orange, N.J.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the opening set 25-16
• Providence led the set wire-to-wire.
• The Friars opened the match with three-consecutive kills on their first three attacks and ultimately got out to a 4-0 lead.
• The Pirates closed the deficit to one (5-4), but Providence scored eight of the next nine points to take a 13-5 lead.
• Seton Hall got a close as six (18-12), but the Friars responded once again, scoring four-straight points for a 22-12 advantage and closed out the set for a 25-16 victory.
• Seniors
Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) and
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) each recorded four kills to pace the Friars.
• Graduate student MacKenzie Taylor (Holbrook N.Y.) recorded seven digs, five assists and one service ace in the set.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Seton Hall won the set, 25-14
• Seton Hall started the second set on a 6-0 run, forcing a Providence timeout.
• The Friars found themselves down 19-9, but rallied to score four of the next five points to get within seven (20-13).
• Seton Hall maintained control and finished off the second frame with a 25-14 victory, including three-straight points to close the set.
• Nelson recorded three kills, while
Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) added two kills in the set.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the third set 25-19 to take a 2-1 edge in the match.
• Neither team was able to mount more than a two-point advantage in the middle stages of the match.
• At that point, the set featured eight ties and the two teams were tied, 15-15.
• Providence trailed 14-12 and responded to take a 16-15 lead. The Friars' spurt included two kills by Mullally before Seton Hall called a timeout.
• The Friars earned the largest lead of the set at 21-17 with the help of a 5-1 scoring run. Rhoden recorded two kills during the run.
• Back-to-back attacking errors by the Pirates help Providence earned a 23-18 edge enroute to the 25-19 win.
• Rhoden and Mullally notched four kills each to lead Providence, while Nelson three recorded three.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Seton Hall evened the match, 2-2, with a 25-17 victory in the third
• Seton Hall used 6-1 run to take 8-2 lead.
• The lead ballooned to 10 (14-4), forcing a Providence timeout.
• Coming out of the break, the Friars scored five-straight points, cutting the deficit to 14-9.
• A 7-2 run provided the Pirates some breathing room with a 21-11 advantage of the scoreboard.
• Providence continued to fight back, inching within six (21-15) on a 4-0 run.
• Seton Hall held on to win the set, 25-17.
• Mullally recorded three kills and two services aces in the set.
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Seton Hall claimed the match with a 15-7 win in the deciding set
• Seton Hall took control in the deciding set, using a 9-4 scoring advantage to close the frame.
MATCH NOTES:
• Mullally finished the night with 11 kills, 14 assists and 14 digs. She also added three blocks.
• Nelson joined Mullally for the team lead in kills, with 11.
•
Sammie Ruggles registered 14 assists and 19 digs, while Taylor completed the evening with 10 assists and a team-best 22 digs.

• Providence will play away from home for the second-straight weekend to open league play as it heads to DePaul (Sept. 30) and Marquette (Oct. 1).
