Field Hockey Opens BIG EAST Play With 5-2 Win Over Villanova

Ally DeCoste recorded a career-high five points on two goals and one assist.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team opened BIG EAST Conference play with a 5-2 victory over Villanova on Friday, Sept. 16 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 2-5 overall (1-0 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats dropped to 4-2 (0-1 BIG EAST).
 
1st QUARTER:
• The Friars outshot the Wildcats 5-2 in the first quarter, including a 3-0 edge in shots on goal.
Ally DeCoste (Braintree, Mass.) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead 4:32 into the game as she deflected a crossing pass from Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland). It marked DeCoste's second goal of the season, and first assist of the year for Gowing.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The second quarter was scoreless as the Friars took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
• The Wildcats were responsible for the only shot attempt of the quarter, but Emma Schwarz's back-handed bid sailed wide.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars scored two goals in the opening 10 minutes of the third quarter to take a 3-0 lead.
• The combination of DeCoste and Gowing struck again just 45-seconds into the frame (30:45).
Sophia Pompeo (Portland, Maine) made it a 3-0 game as she redirected a feed from DeCoste at 39:21 for her third goal of the season.
• Less than a minute later at 40:04, Villanova was awarded a penalty stroke. Sabine De Ruijter was called upon to take the opportunity and converted.
• The Friars took a 3-1 lead into the break.
• Through three quarters, the Friars held a 7-6 advantage in shots and penalty corners were even at one apiece. 
 
4TH QUARTER:
• The Wildcats cut the deficit to one goal (3-2) at the 51:29 mark as Maggie Mick redirected a feed from Emma Schwarz at the post.
• Now within striking distance, the Wildcats pulled their goalkeeper with 4:16 left in the game in favor of an extra attacker and seeking the game-tying goal.
• On the Friars' next offensive possession, they managed to draw a penalty corner and took advantage of an excellent scoring opportunity with Villanova's goalie on the sidelines at 56:01. • On the set piece, Gowing recorded her first goal of the season off a direct shot, assisted by Lisa McNamara (Barre, Vt.) and Nora Goddard-Despot (North Vancouver, British Columbia).
• The Friars were awarded their second penalty corner of the fourth quarter in the final minute and Bella Carrozza (Ridgefield, Conn.) cashed in for her first career goal on a direct shot with 30-seconds left to play. McNamara and Goddard-Despot were credited with assists on the play.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence finished the game with a 10-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. 
• The Friars also held a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners, including the two opportunities late in the fourth quarter that put the game away.
• The Friars' defense held Villanova's top-three point producers scoreless in the game.
• DeCoste's five points on the afternoon (2g/1a) marked a career high for the junior.
• Gowing recorded just the second multi-assist game of her career and she finished with a season-high four points (1g/2a).
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) earned the victory in goal with two saves, while her counterpart from Villanova, Emma Leppert, also recorded two saves.
• Providence's five goals in the victory marked a season high. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will host non-conference foe Bucknell on Sunday, Sept. 18. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
