Field Hockey Set To Host Villanova In BIG EAST Opener At Lennon Family Field

Friars will play their first home matches of the season this weekend against Villanova and Bucknell.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team played its first six matches of the 2022 season on the road and will finally make their home debut at Lennon Family Field this weekend. The Friars' home opener on Friday, Sept. 16 also serves as the 2022 BIG EAST Conference opener as the squad hosts Villanova at 4:00 p.m. Providence will close out the weekend with a non-conference match against Bucknell on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:00 p.m.
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE:
• Providence played its first six games on the road and posted a 1-5 mark, including an 0-3 record vs. nationally ranked opponents.
Sophia Pompeo leads the Friars in scoring with five points on two goals and one assist.
Cami Crook, Ally DeCoste, Lisa McNamara and Celia Preveza have each scored one goal this season. For Crook and DeCoste it marked their first career goals with the Friars.
• Last season, the Friars earned an 8-3 record at home on Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
• The Friars are coming off of back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked teams: vs. No. 6 Iowa (3-1) and No. 22 UMass (2-0).
• The Friars are scheduled to face six nationally-ranked teams this season, overall. The ranked foes who remain on the schedule are No. 11 Connecticut, No. 14 Old Dominion and No. 12 Liberty. All three of those teams are in the BIG EAST Conference. 
• This season, the Friars will feature a veteran squad as 14 of the 23 players on the roster are upperclassmen, including two graduate students, five seniors and seven juniors. The team returns a total of 20 players from last season's roster, including eight starters.
• Offensively, the Friars return 10 of their 13 players who scored at least one point last season, including four of their five double-digit point scorers. Current graduate student Niamh Gowing paced the Friars in 2021 with 20 points on six goals and eight assists. Pompeo (16 points), Nora Goddard-Despot (13 points) and McNamara (12 points) also return to the line-up in 2022. 
• McNamara was selected to play in the 2022 Nexus Championship this summer, while Goddard-Despot has been an active member of the Team Canada's Junior National Team.  
• Graduate student Amanda Collins has been a staple for Providence College on defense and was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region Second Team in 2021. She also is a key contributor for the Friars' offensive and defensive corner units. She finished sixth on the team in scoring last year with nine points on four goals and one assist.
Asia Porter has played 360 minutes in the cage and owns a 2.85 goals against average and a 0.691 save percentage. She collected a season-high 16 saves earlier this season against No. 14 Boston College.
 
 
SCOUTING VILLANOVA:
• Villanova enters Friday's match with a 4-1 overall record, including a 1-1 mark in games played on the road.
• The Wildcat's lone loss of the season came against Ball State on Sept. 4 (4-3) in Muncie, Ind.
• Villanova's most recent game was a 2-1 overtime victory against cross-city rival Penn on Sept. 11. Toni Minichello tied the game 1-1 with 2:45 remaining in regulation and Meghan Mitchell put home the game-winning goal in overtime (64:28).
• Amanda Middleman leads the Wildcats' offense with 11 points on five goals and one assist. She has taken just eight shots through five games and has put seven of them on target (.875). Two of her five goals have been game winners.
• Mitchell is second on the team in scoring with 10 points on three goals and four assists. 
• Anne Drabbe ranks third on the team in scoring with eight points on one goal and a team-best six assists.
• Claire Borman and Emma Leppert have each played significant minutes in goal for Villanova. Borman has played four games with four appearances in the starting line-up and has logged 167 minutes of action. She has posted a 3-1 record to go along with a 1.80 goals against average and a 0.583 save percentage. Leppert has played in three games this season, making her first start in the Wildcats' most recent game against Penn. In 138 minutes of action, she has registered a 1.74 goals against average and a 0.857 save percentage. 
• Last season, Villanova came away with a 5-3 victory over Providence at the Proving Grounds in Conshohocken, Pa. The two teams traded goals throughout the match, with Providence's Amanda Collins breaking a 2-2 tie at the 43:43 mark of the third quarter. The Friars carried their 3-2 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats scored two unanswered goals to win the game.
• Mitchell scored two goals and added one assist for Villanova in the win, while Sophia Pompeo notched two goals for the Friars.
 
 
SCOUTING BUCKNELL:
• Bucknell enters the weekend with a 1-4 overall record and will face Holy Cross on Saturday, Sept. 17 before making its way to Providence.
• The Bison picked up their lone victory of the season against Central Michigan, 4-1, on Sept. 9. The squad is coming off of a 5-2 loss to BIG EAST member Temple on Sept. 11.
• Lily Neilson has scored seven of Bucknell's 11 goals this season and leads the team with 14 points.
• Rachel Apa, Mia Fields, Kira Leclercq and Gianna Puorro have each scored one goal this season.
• Kile Mackenzie (five) and Kayla Kisthardt (four) have combined for nine of the team's 12 assists on the year.
• Clara McCormick has played 275 minutes in goal for Bucknell this season and has been the goalkeeper of record in each match. She owns a 3.50 goals against average and a 0.579 save percentage.
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Upon completion of matches vs. Villanova and Bucknell this weekend, the Friars will head to Washington, D.C. on Friday, Sept. 23 to face BIG EAST foe Georgetown. The match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
