PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated non-conference foe Bucknell, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation and the two teams played two 10-minute overtime sessions, only to have the match decided in a shootout. The Friars prevailed with a 4-3 advantage in the best-of-five shootout. Providence improved to 3-5 on the season, while Bucknell dipped to 2-5
1st QUARTER:
• The first quarter was a scoreless draw, with each team taking one shot on goal.
• The Bison drew a penalty corner at the 12:49 mark and thought they scored the go-ahead goal, but it was disallowed by the officials and the call remained after a review of the play.
2ND QUARTER:
• The game remained scoreless in the second quarter as the two teams went into halftime tied, 0-0.
• Through the opening half of play, Bucknell held a 4-3 edge in shots, including a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Bison also registered the only two penalty corners of the game.

Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) made three saves for the Friars in goal, while Bucknell's Nora Frederick collected two saves in the half.
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence earned its first penalty corner of the game at 32:08 of the third.

Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) recorded her second goal of the season on a direct shot off the corner, assisted by
Lisa McNamara (Barre, Vt.) and
Nora Goddard-Despot (North Vancouver, British Columbia).
• The Friars had a chance to double the lead on their second penalty corner of the afternoon with 43-seconds on the clock.
• Gowing had her shot blocked in the circle and the Bison managed to break out in transition. However, Porter made a diving save at the left post to deny an excellent scoring chance by Gianna Puorro.
4TH QUARTER:
• Bucknell got the equalizer at 47:51 as Lily Neilson scored on a direct shot off a penalty corner, assisted by Mackenzie Kile and Isabella Pavlides (1-1).
• Bucknell's goal forced overtime as regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
OT 1:
• The Friars attempted the first shot of the overtime period, but Gowing's shot from the right side of the circle whistled wide right of the net.
• Bucknell outshot Providence 2-1 in the extra session, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
• Porter was credited with one save in the overtime.
OT 2:
• Bucknell held a 5-4 edge in shots during the second overtime period, but the game remained tied and went to a shootout to determine the winner.
SHOOTOUT:
•
Cami Crook (Somerset, Mass.) got the first opportunity for the Friars in the shootout and she made good on her attempt.
• Bucknell also converted its first opportunity to tie the shootout, 1-1, with Mia Fields cashing in.
• Both teams missed in the next round, leaving the shootout tied, 1-1.
• Gowing put the Friars ahead 2-1 in the third round, and
Asia Porter denied Bucknell's attempt with a save to her left.

Ally DeCoste (Braintree, Mass.) and McNamara finished things off for Providence, scoring on each of their chances to lift the Friars to victory (4-3).
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Today's match marked the first overtime game for both teams this season.
• The last time Providence competed in a shootout dates back to March 27, 2021. The Friars defeated BIG EAST foe Temple, 3-2, in Philadelphia, Pa. That year, the traditional fall season was moved to the spring due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
• At the end of regulation, Bucknell led in shots (14-10), shots on goal (9-6) and penalty corners (5-4).
• Upon conclusion of regulation and two overtimes, the Bison held a 21-15 advantage in shots, including a 13-7 edge in shots on goal.
• Providence finished the day with a slim advantage in penalty corners (6-5).
• Porter was sensational in goal, finishing the day with 12 saves and adding a critical stop in the shootout.
• Gowing scored a goal for the second-straight game and finished the weekend with six points on two goals and two assists.

• The Friars will travel to Washington, D.C. to face BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 23. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
