Field Hockey Continues BIG EAST Play At Georgetown

Friars and Hoyas will square off at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23 in Washington, D.C.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will head to Washington, D.C. on Friday, Sept. 23 to face BIG EAST foe Georgetown. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
• Providence enters Friday's match with a 3-5 overall record, including a 1-0 mark in BIG EAST play. 
• The Friars are in the midst of a two-game win streak, having defeated BIG EAST foe Villanova (5-2) on Sept. 16 and Bucknell (2-1, 2OT/SO) on Sept. 18.
• Three of the Friars' five losses have come against nationally ranked opponents. Providence has four nationally ranked teams remaining on their schedule (as of Sept. 22). All four teams are members of the BIG EAST Conference: No. 9 UConn (Sept. 30), No. 24 Temple (Oct. 7), No. 13 Old Dominion (Oct. 14) and No. 16 Liberty (Oct. 21).
Ally DeCoste leads the Friars in scoring with eight points on three goals and two assists. Two of her three goals have been game winners. In Providence's 5-2 victory over Villanova to open BIG EAST play, DeCoste tallied a career-best five points on two goals and one assist.
Sophia Pompeo is second on the team in scoring with seven points on three goals and one assist, while Niamh Gowing rounds out the multi-goal scorers for Providence with six points on two goals and two assists.
• In two victories last weekend, Gowing recorded two goals and two assists for six points. In the victory over Villanova, she notched one goal and posted the first multi-assist game of her career (two). She was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 20.
Lisa McNamara and Nora Goddard-Despot lead the Friars in assists with three apiece.
Asia Porter has played 498 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 2.41 goals against average and a 0.722 save percentage. In the Friars' most recent game against Bucknell, she registered 12 saves in regulation and overtime and added a critical stop in the penalty shootout to assure the Providence victory. On Sept. 20, Porter was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
• Last season, the Friar earned a 2-1 victory over Georgetown on Sept. 24 in Providence, R.I.
• Providence has earned victories in each of the last nine meetings against the Hoyas. 
• Four of the last five meetings have been decided by a single goal, including two games that went to overtime. Both of those overtime games were played in Washington, D.C.
 
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN:
• Georgetown enters Friday's match with a 3-5 overall record, including an 0-1 mark in BIG EAST play.
• The Hoyas are in the midst of a two-game winless streak, having fallen to LIU (2-1) on Sept. 18 and BIG EAST foe and 12th-ranked Liberty (10-0) on Sept. 16.
• Georgetown's last victory came against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 11 (1-0).
• The Hoyas have posted a 2-1 record at home.
• Vivienne Trumpbour leads Georgetown in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists. She also has tallied two of the Hoyas' three game winning goals on the year.
• Emma van der Veen is second on the team in scoring with 10 points on three goals and four assists.
• Ciara Weets has played 409 minutes in the cage and has recorded a 3.52 goals against average and a 0.718 save percentage. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return home to face No. 9 Connecticut in BIG EAST action on Friday, Sept. 30 at 4:00 p.m. The squad will close the weekend with a non-conference match against Holy Cross on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
