Volleyball Heads to Philadelphia For Penn Invitational

The Friars will kick off the tournament against Temple on Friday, Sept. 16 at 12:00 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Friars will head to Philadelphia on Friday Sept. 16 for the Penn Invitational. Providence will play Temple at 12:00 p.m. and George Washington at 3:30 p.m. on Friday before finishing the weekend against host UPenn on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS: The Friars are entering the tournament with a 7-2 record. Most recently, Providence hosted the 17th Annual Friar Classic where they went 3-0 on the weekend with wins over Saint Peter's, NJIT and Holy Cross. Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) each earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) earned Tournament MVP.
 
Brielle Mullally has collected 99 digs and added 18 blocks so far this season. She has posted three straight double-doubles in the Friars' most recent games with a career-high 25 assists in the game against NJIT.

Kayla Grant leads the team in hitting percentage, hitting .413 on the season. This past weekend in Providence, Grant notched 19 kills, hitting .528, and 6 blocks, in three matches to earn her spot on the All-Tournament Team. The sophomore middle blocker currently leads the team in blocks (28).
 
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) currently leads the team in digs (176) after registering 51 digs over the weekend. She recorded a team-best 23 digs in the match against NJIT. Taylor also notched 10 service aces last weekend to bring her total to 16.
 
Emma Nelson earned Friar Classic Tournament MVP after posting 29 kills on the weekend. She had a weekend-best 13 kills against NJIT. Nelson currently has 88 kills on the season, hitting .373.

SCOUTING THE OWLS:  The Owls head to the Penn Invitational with a record of 4-4. The Owls most recently participated in the Cornell Tournament where they fell to UAlbany and Colgate before they edged out Cornell in five sets.
 
The Owls have three players with over 70 kills on the season. Sophomore Taylor Davenport leads the team with 129 kills across eight matches including the 50 she posted last weekend. Junior Jelena Prolic and redshirt senior Peyton Boyd have 98 and 75 kills, respectfully.
 
Sophomore Patrycja Zielinska leads the team in assists averaging 10.06 assists per set, totaling 332 assists this season.
 
Freshman Samantha Jo Mikosky leads the team in blocks with 39 after adding 22 blocks last weekend.
 
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON: GW travels to Philadelphia with a record of 3-7 after going 1-3 in their last four matches. GW fell to Binghamton before they beat Rider and closed out the Georgetown Invitational with a loss to Georgetown last weekend. GW fell to Coppin State in straight sets at home in their most recent match on Tuesday.
 
Junior Liv Womble leads the team in kills with 114 across 10 matches. She combined for 32 in the most recent three matches, hitting .165.
 
Graduate student Tierra Porter has a team-best 58 blocks after registering a season-high 16 block assists and one solo block in the match against Rider on Sept. 9.
 
Sophomore Grace Allread and freshman Dilara Elmaciolgu combine for 302 assists. Allread had had double-digit assists in each of the matches she has played in this year, Elmaciolgu has had six double-digit games.
 
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS: The Quakers are going into the Tournament with a 1-5 record after losing three straight matches against Cal State Northridge, Saint Mary's and San Francisco over the weekend.
 
Freshman Abigail Reed leads the team in digs (86) while reaching double-digit digs in five of the six matches the Quakers have played this season.
 
Freshman Anna Shohfi averages 8.67 assists per set, giving her a team-best 130 on the season.
 
Senior Madeline McGregor leads the team in kills (54), averaging 2.70 kills per set.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars are set to open BIG EAST play in the Tri-state area as they will travel to Queens, N.Y. to take on St. Johns on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. Providence will remain on the road to play Seton Hall at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 24 in South Orange, N.J.
