PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Gridiron Club of Greater Boston president Cheryl Duddy Schoenfeld announced today (Feb. 7) that 25 NCAA Division One players are semifinalists for the 70
th Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England. Providence College sophomore
Brett Berard (East Greenwich, R.I.) as well as juniors
Parker Ford (Wakefield, R.I.) and
Jaxson Stauber (Plymouth, Minn.) were named semifinalists.
The nation's oldest nationally-recognized college hockey honor, the Walter Brown Award was established in 1953 by the members of the 1933 Massachusetts Rangers, the first American team ever to win the World Championship Tournament. Brown coached the Rangers to the title in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where the team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime in the championship game.
Berard leads all Hockey East players in scoring with 32 points on 14 goals and 18 assists. The sophomore also boasts league-highs in game-winning goals (4) and power-play goals (7). The 87 shots on goal rank second among all Hockey East players.
Ford is tied for sixth in the league with 24 points on 12 goals and 12 assists. The junior tops the league with 94 shots on goal and 381 faceoff wins – good for a .613 winning percentage.
Stauber, who is a Walter Brown Award semifinalist for the second-consecutive season, has posted a 17-11-2 record with a 2.02 GAA and .927 save percentage over 30 games this year. Stauber ranks in the top-10 among NCAA goaltenders in wins, save percentage, minutes played and shutouts (4).
