Volleyball Defeats DePaul In Four Sets

Brielle Mullally posted her sixth triple-double of the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team defeated DePaul University in four sets on Sunday, Nov. 13 in Alumni Hall. 
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took set one, 25-21.
  • Providence used an early 6-1 run to take a 10-6 lead.
  • DePaul closed the deficit at 12 and continued its run to take a 15-13 lead, forcing a Providence timeout.
  • Out of the break, the Friars scored four straight points to take the lead (17-15). The spurt was highlighted by three kills from Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.).
  • The lead ballooned to as large as six (24-18) before DePaul scored three-straight to cut it back to three (24-21).
  • Providence closed out strong to take the set 25-21.
  • Mullally and Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) paced the Friar offense with four kills apiece. Rhoden hit a team-best .500.

SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won set two for a 2-0 edge in the match.
  • Providence maintained the lead during the beginning stages of the set until DePaul was able to match it at 13.
  • Neither team was able to mount more than a two-point lead in the middle stages of the set, leading to a late Providence timeout.
  • Out of the break, the teams continued to trade points, pushing the set past regulation.
  • The Friars scored two straight points to close the set, 27-25.
  • Mullally recorded a team-best six kills, followed by Emma Nelson's (West Chester, Pa.) five.
  • Eight Friars were on the board for digs, led by Mullally's five. Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) followed with four.
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: DePaul battled back to take set three, 25-22.
  • An early 11-9 lead by DePaul led to a Providence timeout. Out of the break, the Friars were able to take back the lead with a 5-1 run (14-12).
  • From this point, the Blue Demons scored six of the next seven points (18-15), leading to a second timeout by Providence.
  • The Friars rallied to get within two, but it wasn't enough to overcome the DePaul lead. The Blue Demons took set three, 25-22.
  • Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) hit a team-best .500 and notched four kills.
  • Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) led the Friar defense with seven digs.
 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the fourth set, 25-17, to win the match.
  • A 4-1 start by Providence allowed it to take a 10-7 lead.
  • At this point, the Friars stayed in control and went on a 5-2 run (15-9), led by Maryanne Boyle's (Blacklick, Ohio) two kills.
  • DePaul rallied to get as close as five (22-17) but the Friars closed the fourth set with three straight points to take the match, 25-17.
  • Nelson led the way with five kills. Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) followed with four and hit .500.
  • Sammie Ruggles (North Olmsted, Ohio) and Mullally combined for 14 assists.

MATCH NOTES
  • Mullally posted her sixth triple-double of the season with 14 kills, 21 assists and 10 digs.
  • Three additional Friars had double-digit digs: Nelson (12), Rhoden (11) and Grant (11).
  • Taylor collected a team-best 16 digs, followed by LaMacchia's 15.
  • This victory over DePaul marks the first friar win over the Blue Demons since 2018.

WHAT'S NEXT:
Providence will prepare to close out the regular season as it welcome's Connecticut on Nov. 16 at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Butler on Nov. 18 for the regular-season finale.
