PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to BIG EAST foe Temple in a shootout on Friday, Oct. 7 at Howarth Field in Philadelphia, Pa. After 60 minutes of regulation and two scoreless overtime periods, the Owls used a 3-1 advantage in a shootout to earn the 2-1 conference victory. Both team entered the match in a four-way tie for second place in the BIG EAST standings at 2-1. The Friars dropped to 5-7 overall (2-2 BIG EAST), while the Owls improved to 10-3 (3-1 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars recorded the lone shot of the opening quarter as
Ally DeCoste (Braintree, Mass.) put an attempt on cage 2:56 into the action.
• The two teams were scoreless through one quarter (0-0).
2ND QUARTER:
• Temple earned back-to-back penalty corners midway through the second quarter, but the Friars' defense held firm.

Nora Goddard-Despot (North Vancouver, British Columbia) gave the Providence a 1-0 advantage at the 25:00 minute mark. She split two defenders in the circle and sent a back-handed shot into the the cage while being challenged by the goalkeeper.
• The Friars took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
• Temple held a 3-2 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in penalty corners in the opening half, while PC used a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal to help secure the lead.
3RD QUARTER:
• Temple outshot Providence 2-1 in the third, but the Friars were able to maintain their 1-0 lead through 45 minutes of play.
4TH QUARTER:
• Temple tied the game, 1-1, in the opening 35-seconds of the fourth quarter as Tess Muller redirected a feed from Caitlyn Amsden.
• Muller's goal would eventually force overtime as regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
OT:
• Providence outshot the Owls 3-1 in the first 10-minute overtime, but neither team was able to tally a deciding goal.
• The Friars earned their first penalty corner of the game with 4:30 remaining in the second overtime.
Niamh Gowing's attempt at the cage during the set piece was saved by Temple's Molly Frey.
• Moments later Goddard-Despot hit the post while seeking the game winner (77:39).
• At the conclusion of the second overtime, the score remained 1-1 and the two teams went to a shootout.
• The Owls used a 3-1 advantage in the shootout to earn the 2-1 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Nine of the last 10 meetings between Providence and Temple have been decided by one goal, including six overtime games. Friday's match marked the third shootout between the two teams during that 10-game span.
• Goddard-Despot scored a goal for the second-straight game and has a total of three goals on the season.

Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) finished the day with five saves in goal for Providence. Frey posted three saves for Temple, while Nienke Oerlemans added a defensive save.
• At the end of regulation, Temple held an 8-3 lead in shots and a 7-0 margin in penalty corners.
• The teams were even in shots on goal through 60 minutes of regulation (3-3).

• The Friars return home to Lennon Family Field to host No. 22 Maine on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the start of Sunday's game, the program will honor five seniors and two graduate students as part of its annual senior day celebration.
