PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team edged out BIG EAST foe Georgetown in five sets on Friday, Oct. 14 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took set one, 26-24.
- Georgetown held an early 9-5 lead, forcing a Providence timeout.
- The Friars went on a mid-set run, outscoring the Hoyas 11-5 to take a 19-17 lead.
- The Friars scored four-straight points to close out the set, 26-24.
- Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) combined for eight digs.
- Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) paced the Friars offensively, recording five kills on nine attempts.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Hoyas battled back to take set two, 25-21.
- Providence started the second set on 6-3 run, forcing a Georgetown timeout.
- The Hoyas used an 8-3 run to take the lead, 15-12.
- The Friars found themselves down by five (18-13) but rallied to score five of the next seven points to get within two (20-18).
- The teams traded points until Georgetown scored two straight to bring them to 24. After one more point-for-point exchange, the Hoyas took the set.
- Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) notched a team-best four kills on seven attempts, hitting .571.
- Sammie Ruggles (North Olmsted, Ohio) added seven digs and seven assists, bringing her totals to 10 and 14, respectively.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the third set 25-17 to take a 2-1 edge in the match.
- The Friars opened the set with a 6-2 lead after multiple errors by the Hoyas. However, Georgetown closed the deficit and tied the frame, 8-8.
- From this point, the Friars went on a 7-3 run to separate themselves from the Hoyas, Providence took a 15-11 lead.
- Providence maintained control and finished off the third frame with a 25-17 victory.
- Jiji Lykins (Coral Springs, Fla.) set the defensive tone for the Friars, with six digs.
- Mullally led the Friars with four kills. Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) and Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) each added three kills.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS:
- Georgetown used a 5-2 run to take an 11-5 lead.
- The lead widened to eight (16-8), before Providence scored three-straight points to cut the deficit to five.
- Providence had a late push, cutting the lead to as little as four, but Georgetown held on to win the set, 25-20.
- Mullally put up a team-best seven kills to pace the Friars.
- LaMacchia collected six digs and Ruggles added four.
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence claimed the match with a 16-14 win in the deciding set.
- Georgetown took an early 7-4 lead.
- A 6-3 run by the Friars diminished the deficit, bringing the set to a 10-10 tie. The Friars' run included two kills by Rhoden.
- From this point, neither team was able to mount more than a one-point advantage until Providence scored two straight to earn the victory.
MATCH NOTES:
- Mullally and Ruggles each notched a double-double. Mullally recorded 22 kills and 22 assists, while Ruggles finished the night with 29 assists and 15 digs.
- Lykins led the Friars with 17 digs.
- Taylor finished the night with 16 digs. The grad student is 11 digs shy of moving into third place on the Friars' all-time career list for digs. Her current career total stands at 1,588 digs.

The Friars will take on Villanova in Alumni Hall on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 4:30 p.m. to close out the weekend. Next week, Providence will travel to Storrs, Conn. to match up against Connecticut on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. before hosting the Butler Bulldogs at home in Alumni Hall on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 3:00 p.m.
