Volleyball Hosts Georgetown And Villanova For Weekend Matches

The Friars will kick off the weekend against Georgetown on Friday, Oct. 14 at 6:00 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Providence College volleyball team is set to host Georgetown University on Friday, Oct. 14 at 6:00 p.m. before welcoming Villanova University on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 4:30 p.m.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… The Friars head into the weekend with an overall record of 9-9 (1-5 BIG EAST). Providence most recently faced Xavier and No. 21 Creighton in their BIG EAST home opener on Oct. 7-8. The Friars edged out the Musketeers in four sets before falling to Creighton in straight sets. The victory over Xavier marks the first Friar win over the Musketeers since 2017.
 
Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) continues to be an offensive asset for the Friars as the sophomore middle blocker ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage. She is hitting .323 through 70 sets. Grant has notched 124 kills so far this season, including 21 in conference play. The middle blocker leads the team in blocks, with 54 block assists and eight solo blocks on the season.
 
Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) leads the Friars in points with 216.5 averaging 3.09 points per set. Mullally has remained an all-around player for Providence through conference play after recording 76 assists, 53 kills, 45 digs, 13 block assists and nine service aces across six matches. The senior currently ranks third in the BIG EAST in services aces per set (.43). Mullally earned a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod on Oct. 10 after recording a triple-double to steer the Friars past Xavier.
 
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.), the Friars' defensive specialist, has also been a key player for the Friars. Taylor leads Providence in digs (356) and her 5.09 digs per set ranks second in the BIG EAST. The graduate student has also added 79 assists and ranks seventh in the BIG EAST in service aces per set (.39) after totaling 27 this season.
 
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) leads the team in kills after adding a team-best eight kills in last Saturday's match against Creighton and a total of 21 kills over the weekend. The senior has 21 blocks for the Friars including 10 in conference play.
 
SCOUTING THE HOYAS… Georgetown enters this weekend with a 2-4 BIG EAST record and is 4-13 overall. The Hoyas went 1-1 last week as they took down Villanova in four sets on Oct. 5 before falling to Butler, 3-1, on Oct. 7.
 
Sophomore Mary Grace Goyena leads the Hoyas in kills (206). Goyena is currently ranked eighth in the BIG EAST in points with 232.5 and has added 22 blocks and 15 service aces for the Hoyas.
 
Sophomore Lilly Costigan's 7.68 assists per set ranks seventh in the BIG EAST as she leads the team with 292 assists. Costigan also ranks sixth in the conference in service aces per set (.39).
 
Sophomore Karis Park has collected a team-best 256 digs including 101 in conference play. The libero recorded 20+ digs in three of the Hoyas' last four matches.
 
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS… The Villanova Wildcats enter the weekend with a 5-13 overall record (1-5 in the BIG EAST). The Wildcats went 0-2 last week after falling to both Georgetown and Butler in four sets.  Villanova is looking to get back in the win column against Connecticut on Oct. 13 before traveling to take on the Friars on Oct. 15.
 
Junior Kiera Booth ranks second in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage, hitting .352 on 344 total attempts; Booth's percentage in conference play sits even higher at .400. Booth leads the Wildcats in blocks with 56 block assists and five solo blocks.
 
Sophomore Elizabeth Feczko has collected 90 digs so far in conference play, leading the Wildcats. Feczko has recorded double-digit digs in nine straight matches.
 
Senior Morgan Belle's 6.21 assists per set ranks ninth in the BIG EAST. Belle leads the Wildcats with 292 assists. Belle has also added 19 total blocks and 44 digs.
 
WHAT'S NEXT… Providence will travel to Storrs, Conn. to match up against Connecticut on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. before hosting the Butler Bulldogs at home in Alumni Hall on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 3:00 p.m.
