Women’s Soccer Hosts No. 21 Xavier For BIG EAST Opener

Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will begin BIG EAST play against No. 21 Xavier University on Thursday, Sept. 23 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars are coming off a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival, Brown University, on Thursday, Sept. 16 in Providence, R.I. Providence is 4-0-0 on Chapey Field this season.

Friars Win The Crosstown Cup... Providence beat Brown, 2-1, on Thursday, Sept. 16 on Chapey Field to conclude non-conference play. After being down, 1-0, the Friars scored two second half goals to secure the win. Sophomore Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) tied the score in the 62nd minute. Fifth-year Hannah McNulty (Warrick, R.I.) scored her first goal of the season and the game winner in the 71st minute. It marked McNulty's 25th career goal, which places her in third place among the program's all-time scorers with 60 points. McNulty passes former Friar, Eileen Farren, who has been in third place since she graduated in 1990.
 
Bodmer Named BIG EAST Goalkeeper Of The Week... Sophomore Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday, Sept. 20. Bodmer was tested against Brown, making eight saves for the Friars. After allowing a goal in the 17th minute, Bodmer held steady for the final 73 minutes as Providence scored two second half goals to defeat the Bears. Bodmer had four saves in each half. No other winning BIG EAST Goalkeeper had more than three saves last week.
 
Series History Against Xavier… The Friars hold a 4-4-0 overall record against the Musketeers. In their last meeting, Providence fell to Xavier, 2-0, on October 13, 2019.
 
Scouting The Musketeers… Xavier is currently ranked No. 21 and enter Thursday's match with a 7-0-1 overall record. The Musketeers are coming off their first draw of the season against Bowling Green on Thursday, Sept. 16. Xavier was picked seventh in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll. Xavier returns two All-Conference Award winners from last spring, senior Molly McLaughlin who was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and sophomore Sonia Vargas who was named to the All-Freshman Team.
 
Friars Picked Fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll… The BIG EAST Conference announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Thursday, August 12. The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Butler and UConn.
 
Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Last season, Hughes played in all 12 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting lineup four times. She led Providence in points (14), assists (six) and was tied for first on the team in goals (four). At the conclusion of the season, she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
