CONSHOHOCKEN, PA. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to Villanova, 5-3, in BIG EAST Conference action on Sept. 17 in Conshohocken, Pa. The Wildcats scored two unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to take the win.
1st QUARTER:
• Meghan Mitchell put the Wildcats on the board for a 1-0 lead at the 11:16 mark. She was assisted on the play by Caitline Van Goeverden.
• The lead didn't last long for Villanova, as
Sophia Pompeo (Portland, Maine) found the back of the cage for Providence at 12:55, marking her first goal of the season.
Lisa McNamara (Barre, Vt.) earned her team-leading seventh assist of the year on the play.
• Villanova led in shots (5-4) and corners (3-1), while Providence held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence was the aggressor for much of the second quarter, as it outshot Villanova 5-2 and held a 3-0 advantage in corners.
• Three of the Friars' five shots were on target, but the Wildcat's goalkeeper Jordan McGinley kept PC out of the cage.
• At the half, Providence goalie
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) had recorded two saves, while McGinley stopped five shots.
• The two teams went into halftime tied, 1-1.
3RD QUARTER:
• Mitchell put the Wildcats ahead 2-1 at 38:44 as she deflected the ball into the cage on a corner.
• Providence responded quickly as Pompeo notched her second goal of the day during a penalty corner to tie the game, 2-2 (39:12). She was assisted by
Nora Goddard-Despot (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland).
• Just over a minute later, it was the Wildcats went back on top (3-2), as Van Goeverden scored, unassisted, at 40:33.
• At 43:43,
Amanda Collins (San Diego, Calif.) tied the game, 3-3, as she batted a deflection into the back of the cage during a penalty corner.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Wildcats outshot Providence 5-0 in the fourth quarter and scored two unanswered goals to earn the 5-3 victory.
• Amanda Middleman scored at 48:06 and Sabine de Ruijter added an insurance goal at 52:57.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Villanova defeated the Friars for the first time since 2015.
• At the game's conclusion, the Wildcats led in shots (19-12) and shots on goal (12-9).
• Providence recorded nine penalty corners to Villanova's eight.
• Porter finished the game with seven saves, while McGinley collected six saves for 'Nova.

• The Friars will remain on the road to face No. 20 Monmouth on Sunday, Sept. 19. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. in West Long Branch, N.J.
