PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team opened its 2021 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Merrimack College on Friday, August 27 at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-Providence held the lead for the entirety of the first set, taking the set by a score of 25-10.
-
Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) led the Friars with seven kills and a 1.000 hitting percentage.
-
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) recorded 13 assists and
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) had a team-high five digs.
-The Friars recorded two team blocks and held the Warriors to an overall .174 hitting percentage.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-The Friars captured the second set, 25-17.
-
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) recorded seven kills, while Barber added 11 assists.
-Barber also recorded a set-high six digs.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-The Friars took the third set, 25-15.
-Nelson led Providence with five kills. Freshman
Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) recorded four.
-Taylor recorded eight digs.
-Barber racked up double digits in assists for the third-straight set (10).
-As a team, the Friars recorded 20 digs and held Merrimack to a -.027 attack percentage.
MATCH NOTES:
- For the match, Providence hit .409, with 46 kills and 10 errors on 88 total attacks.
-Barber posted her first double-double of the season, tallying 34 assists with 11 digs.
- Taylor led the Friars with 13 digs in the match.
-Nelson finished the day with a team-high 14 kills. In her collegiate debut for the Friars, Rhoden finished second on the team in kills, with nine.

Providence will return to play tonight, August 27 at 7:00 p.m., versus Army. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
