PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Â The Providence College volleyball team will begin its 2021 season at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. at the Army Invitational on August 27. The Friars will be playing two matches on Friday, August 27 against Merrimack College (11:00 a.m.) and Army (7:00 p.m.). On the following day, Providence will play a single match versus Iona College (2:30 p.m.).

SCOUTING THE FRIARS:Â The Friars finished the abbreviated Spring 2021 season with a 7-3 overall record and a 5-3 record in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence was set to make its first appearance at the BIG EAST Tournament since 1999, after clinching the No. 2 seed in the East Region but withdrew from the tournament due to COVID-related issues.

The Friars will be returning 12 players along with five newcomers. Providence will be led by graduate student
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.), seniors
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) and
Emma Fink (Western Springs, Ill.) and juniors
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) and
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.). A 2021 All-BIG EAST Preseason and 2020-21 All-BIG EAST Team selection, Barber returns for her final year after finishing first on the team in assists (362) and assists per set (8.83) while ranking fourth in the BIG EAST for assists. Taylor comes into the year after finishing with a team-high 125 digs with 17 aces. Nelson and Leitman both look to build off successful sophomore seasons, carrying 81 and 99 total kills, respectively.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS: The Merrimack College Warriors finished their 2020-21 season with a record of 0-13 and a 0-10 mark in the Northeast Conference.

The Warriors return two of their three top attackers, senior Brooke Leestma (65) and junior Maegan Hladick (41), along with their assist leader, fellow junior Quinn Kellogg (102).

SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTS: The Army Black Knights went 6-3 last season, with a 4-2 mark in the Patriot League.

The Black Knights return their top two players Allanah Cutler and Paige Fixemer. Cutler led the team in kills (113) with Fixemer tallying the second most kills (91).

SCOUTING THE GAELS: The Iona College Gaels recorded a 3-7 overall record with a 3-6 mark in the MAAC in the 2020-21 season.
Seniors Alessandra Brady and Cassandra Patsos are the top returning attackers for the Gaels, tallying 77 and 48 kills, respectively. Samantha Juran, the team leader in assists (187), is also returning for her junior season.
WHAT'S NEXT:Â The Providence College volleyball team will be on the road again next weekend for the Holly Young Tournament at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. The Friars will face off against Siena College on Friday, September 3 (12:30 p.m.) before their match against Fairleigh Dickinson University later that afternoon (3:30 p.m.). Providence will play host UNH on Saturday, September 4 at 2:00 p.m.
