Geneva, Ohio – The Providence College Friars competed in the third day of the 2021 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships. Sophomore Kevin Hood won the 100-yard breaststroke to claim the title.
After a strong start, Hood led the race at the 50-yard mark. He maintained his lead through the next 25 yards and widened the gap with a clean last turn. Seton Hall's Gennarino Conzemius made an effort to catch Hood down the final stretch but came up short. Hood reached the wall first, swimming a 55.52. The sophomore's time ties a program best – matching Ryan Trammel's 2018 mark. Hood is the first Friar to bring home a men's BIG EAST swimming and Diving championship since Horace Bowden in 1985.
Sophomore Sally Alrutz bested her own record in the 100-yard backstroke while placing fifth in the event. Alrutz improved the record to 55.91, previously set at 56.01.
Junior Justin Viotto placed second in the 400-yard IM, one spot better than his third-place finish from his sophomore campaign. His 3:53.21 improved his own program record in the event by more than two seconds. Senior Andrew Ferrell topped his own program record in the 100-yard butterfly, reaching the wall at 49.41. He set the previous record, 49.86, at the 2020 BIG EAST Championships. Freshman Will Layden continues to leave his mark on the program's record book as he tallies his second program record of the BIG EAST Championships. Layden's 50.07 is a new program record, outpacing a mark he set in the prelims earlier in the day.
