Women’s Soccer Hosts Seton Hall To Conclude Regular Season

Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will host Seton Hall on Thursday, Oct. 28 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. This match will wrap up the team's regular season schedule. The Friars enter the match currently ranked fifth in the BIG EAST standings and with a 9-5-3 overall record, including a 4-3-2 mark in BIG EAST play. On Sunday, Oct. 24 Providence beat DePaul, 1-0, in double overtime in Chicago, Ill.

Seniors And Fifth-Years To Be Honored...Prior to the game against Seton Hall, the team will honor eight members of its program who will be completing their careers with the Friars. Providence will honor graduate student Christina Rodgers (Scotch Plains, N.J.) along with three fifth-year student athletes Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.), Jana Braun (Frittlingen, Germany), and Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.). The team will also honor four seniors Caroline Drinkwater (Duxbury, Mass.), Celina Falzarano (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.), Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) and Mara Rodriguez (Rochester, N.Y.).
 
Providence Defeats DePaul In Double Overtime...The Friars beat the Blue Demons, 1-0, in double overtime on Sunday, Oct. 24 in Chicago, Ill. Fifth-year Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) scored the game-winner in the 106th minute off a pass from sophomore Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.). Sophomore Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) recorded her fifth shutout of the season with two saves.
 
Providence At Anderson Stadium...The Friars have posted a 6-1-1 record on Chapey Field this season. They have outscored their opponents 20-5.
 
Snead Named To The BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll... Sophomore Avery Snead (Wrentham, Mass.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, Oct 25. The sophomore scored the game-tying goal against UConn in a 1-1 double overtime draw on Thursday, Oct. 21 in Providence, R.I.
 
Snead has played a key role in the Friars defense this season, playing over 1,500 minutes. Last week, she led the defense which helped Providence outshoot UConn and DePaul 50-12, including 24-5 on goal.
 
Birchwell and Hughes Moving Up... After defeating DePaul, Birchwell and Hughes both moved up in rankings among the programs all-time scorers. Sunday marked the fifth time this season that this pair has gotten a goal or an assist together. With Birchwell's goal, she now has 44 points on 16 goals and 12 assists and is tied for 10th place all-time. She also is tied for fifth-place in assists in the BIG EAST.
 
With Hughes' assist, she now has 34 points on 12 goals and 10 assists and is tied for 19th among the programs all-time scorers. Hughes ranks in the top-10 in six different statistical categories in the BIG EAST. Hughes ranks fifth in goals (8) and goals per game (0.47), fifth in points (20) and points per game (1.18). She also ranks first in shots (66) and shots per game (3.88).
 
Series History Against Seton Hall... The Friars hold a 10-9-0 all-time record against the Pirates. Providence has won 10 out of their last 13 meetings. During the 2021 spring season, the Friars swept the series against the Pirates (March 11, March 28).
 
Scouting The Pirates... Seton Hall enters the match with a 6-11-0 overall record, including a 1-8-0 mark in BIG EAST play. The Pirates are coming off a 3-0 loss against Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 24. Seton Hall is led by junior Naomi Welch with 11 points on four goals and three assists.
 
Up Next... The first round of the BIG EAST Tournament will begin on Sun. Oct 31 with the higher seeds hosting. The semifinals and finals will take place on Thursday, Nov. 4 and Sunday Nov. 7 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Friars are guaranteed a BIG EAST Tournament berth with a win against Seton Hall.
