LYNCHBURG, VA. – The Providence College field hockey team held a 2-0 lead at halftime against No. 9 Liberty on the road, but the Flames' potent offense tied the game in the third (2-2) and eventually scored the go-ahead goal with 51:42 in the fourth quarter.
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence earned its first penalty corner of the day with 6:04 remaining in the first quarter and
Sophia Pompeo (Portland, Maine) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead as she tipped in a pass from
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland).
• The Flames earned an offensive corner at the 13:22 mark and peppered Friars' goalkeeper
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) with five-consecutive shots – all of which she saved.
• Porter completed the opening 15 minutes with nine saves.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence maintained its 1-0 lead into halftime despite being outshot 5-0 in the frame.
• Porter collected two saves in the second.
• Liberty was held scoreless through the first two quarters for just the second time this season.
3RD QUARTER:
• Pompeo gave the Friars a 2-0 lead at the 38:21 mark as
Marlies Kool (Rosmalen, The Netherlands) fed a ball into her from the top of the circle. Pompeo's shot ricocheted off the Flames' goalkeeper and into the left side of the cage.
• The Flames entered the match as one of the top offenses in the country and tied the game, 2-2, with back-to-back goals by Jill Bolton and Bethany Dykema at 41:15 and 43:55.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Flames kept the pressure on in the fourth a got the go-ahead goal at 51:42 on a penalty corner.
• Maddie Hosler was credited with the goal as she deflected in a feed at the right post from Jodie Connolly.
• Liberty closed out the scoring with a goal by Charlotte Vaanhold tally (56:50) and Lizzie Hamlett (59:05) to take the 5-2 win.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Porter finished the match with a career-high 22 saves. She recorded her previous career-high of 17 saves against Boston College (April 14, 2021).
• Pompeo's two goals tied her career high. She also scored two goals against Villanova earlier this season on September 15.
• The Friars are just the fourth team this season to score a goal against Liberty in the first quarter, joining Stanford, Northwestern and Temple.
• The Friars led 1-0 at halftime. It marked just the second time this season that Liberty trailed at the half. Louisville is the only other team to hold an advantage over Liberty at halftime (2-0).
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Friday, Oct. 29 against BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac. The match will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
• Providence will host Dartmouth in its final regular-season game of the year on Sunday, Oct. 31. The program will honor five members of the team who will be completing their careers with the Friars. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m., and the ceremony will be held prior to the start of the match.
