PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac, 5-2, on Oct. 29 in Providence, R.I.
1st QUARTER:
• The Friars took a 1-0 lead on their first penalty corner of the evening as junior
Sophia Pompeo (Portland, Maine) tipped in a feed from
Roos Michiels (Noord-Brabrant, The Netherlands) at 5:50.
• Quinnipiac outshot the Friars, 2-1, and also held a 2-1 edge in penalty corners.
2nd QUARTER:
• The Friars added two more goals in the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
•
Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) deflected a pass from
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) at the left post at the 21:40 mark.
• Just 1:24 later, Pompeo found the cage for a second time, unassisted. She carried the ball 30 yards into the left side of the circle and beat the Quinnipiac goalkeeper on the short side (23:04).
• The Friars held a 5-3 advantage in shots at halftime, including a 4-2 margin in shots on goal.
3rd QUARTER:
• Providence took a 4-0 advantage on the scoreboard as Ward earned her second goal of the evening at 41:36.
• She received a long pass down the field from Michiels and had only the goalkeeper to beat for the score. It marked Michiels' second assist of the night.
• Quinnipiac got on the board for the first time during a penalty corner opportunity.
• Michaela Grajales connected off a direct shot, assisted by Brook Whipkey and Stella Tegtmeier at 42:43.
4th QUARTER:
• Gowing added a fifth goal for the Friars at 50:52 as she stole the ball from a Quinnipiac player and took it 35 yards into the circle and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one, unassisted.
• Quinnipiac closed out the scoring at 57:35 with a back-handed effort from Julianna Cappello on the left side of the circle, assisted by Emilia Massarelli.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• It marked the second-straight game that Pompeo scored two goals.
• She has scored four goals on her last five shot attempts dating back to the Liberty game on Oct. 22.
• Pompeo's younger sister, Lucia, is a freshmen for Quinnipiac and the two players each started for their respective programs.
• Ward also finished the night with two goals.
• Pompeo, Ward and Gowing each own a team-best six goals on the season.
• The Friars held an 11-5 advantage in shots for the game, while Quinnipiac held a 4-2 edge in offensive corners.
•
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) finished the game with two saves.
• Mack Vorel recorded three saves for Quinnipiac in the cage.
• After being held scoreless for four-straight games from Sept. 26 to Oct. 8, the Friars have now scored 10 goals in the last four games.
• Providence's five goals vs. Quinnipiac tied a season high. The squad also scored five goals against LIU on Sept. 12.
