QUEENS, N.Y. – The Providence College volleyball team defeated the St. John's Red Storm in a BIG EAST match up, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 2 in Queens, N.Y. The Friars lost the first sets but rallied back the take the final three, earning their first BIG EAST victory.
1ST SET:
• St. John's defeated the Friars 25-18 in the opening set.
• The set was neck and neck, and consisted of 11 lead changes.
•
Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) led the Friars with six kills, with
Allison Barber recording a set-high 10 assists.
•
Jiji Lykins (Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) contributed four digs each.
2ND SET:
• The Friars rallied back from the first set to take the Red Storm, 25-23.
• Rhoden and
Maryanne Boyle (Blacklick, Ohio) tallied a team-high five kills in the set. Boyle carried an impressive .833 hitting percentage, off of six total attempts.
• Barber contributed 11 assists in the set and match a team-high three digs with
Natalie Benson (Bourbonnais, Ill.).
3RD SET:
• Providence earned a 27-25 victory in the third.
• Lykins, Boyle, and Rhoden tied for team-high kills with three each.
• Barber added 11 assists.
• LaMacchia paced the Friars defensively, recording six digs on the set.
4TH SET:
• The Friars took the final set, 25-20.
• Providence recorded four team blocks in the set and held the Red Storm to a .029 hitting percentage.
• The set was tied seven times throughout the set before Providence claimed victory.
• Rhoden led the team in kills (six)
• Barber recorded a set-high 10 assists.

Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) contributed six digs.
NOTES / MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
• The victory marks the Friars first BIG EAST victory of the 2021 season.
• Rhoden recorded a match-high 18 kills.
• LaMacchia led the team defensively, tallying 16 digs.
• Barber finished the night with a match-high in assists (42) while LaMacchia recorded a match-high of five service aces.

• The Friars return next weekend for their BIG EAST home opener against Marquette University on Friday, October 8 before facing DePaul University at home on Sunday, October 10.
