Women’s Soccer Travels To Butler For BIG EAST Match-Up

Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14 in Indianapolis, Ind.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to play the Butler Bulldogs on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. The Friars are unbeaten in their last four games and enter the match with an 8-3-2 overall record, including a 3-1-1 mark in BIG EAST play. Providence went 2-0-0 last week, defeating Villanova on the road, 1-0, in double overtime (Oct. 7) and then returned to Providence, R.I. to beat Marquette 3-1 (Oct. 10).

Providence Beats Marquette In BIG EAST Action... The Friars beat the Golden Eagles, 3-1, on Sunday, Oct. 10 in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) gave the Friars an early 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute. Fifth-year Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) scored in the 53rd minute and junior Ava Brandt (Chester, N.J.) closed out the scoring for the Friars in the 77th minute of play. It marked Brandt's first career goal in a Friar uniform.
Friars Defeat The Wildcats In Double Overtime... On Thursday, Oct. 7, Providence beat Villanova, 1-0, in double overtime. Hughes scored the game winner from the top of the box in the 107th minute off a pass from fifth-year Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.).
Hughes, Bodmer Earn BIG EAST Weekly Awards... Hughes, who was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, led Providence with a goal in each victory last week. She scored the golden goal in the 107th minute against Villanova and then gave the Friars an early advantage in the 12th minute against Marquette. Hughes led the BIG EAST in shots (12) last week and led the Friars to a 36-12 shot advantage against their opponents.
Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Bodmer (Monroe, Township, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. She went 2-0-0 on the week with a .857 save percentage and 0.46 goals against average. Bodmer earned her first shutout on the road at Villanova, giving her a total of four shutouts this season.
Series History Against Butler... The Bulldogs hold an 8-3-1 all-time advantage over the Friars. In their last meeting in the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals, Providence tied Butler 1-1 in double overtime and then beat the Bulldogs 5-4 in penalty kicks to move on to the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals.
Scouting The Bulldogs... Butler enters the match with a 10-2-1 overall record, including a 3-1-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Bulldogs are coming off a 1-0 loss to Georgetown on Thursday, Oct. 7. It marked their first loss in twelve matches.
Butler was selected to finish second in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Friars and Bulldogs are currently tied for third place in BIG EAST standings. Redshirt junior Katie Soderstrom leads the Bulldogs in scoring this season with 24 points on nine goals and six assists. Freshman Emma Martin backs Butler in goal with a 0.789 save percentage and a 0.64 goals against average.
Friars Picked Fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll… The BIG EAST Conference announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Thursday, August 12. The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Butler and UConn.
Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Last season, Hughes played in all 12 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting lineup four times. She led Providence in points (14), assists (six) and was tied for first on the team in goals (four). At the conclusion of the season, she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
