Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller At Seton Hall

Shaliyah Rhoden recorded a season-high 23 kills.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Providence College volleyball team fell to Seton Hall in BIG EAST Conference action, 3-2, on Friday, Oct. 1 in South Orange, N.J. The Friars lost the first two sets before staging a wild comeback effort to force a deciding fifth set. 
 
1ST SET:
• Seton Hall defeated the Friars 25-18 in the opening set.
• The Friars scored the first point of the set before Seton Hall reeled off five-straight points.
• Providence hit just .077 in the opening set, with eight kills and six errors on 26 attacking opportunities.
• Providence trailed by as many as 10 (23-13) but cut the deficit to 24-18 with a 5-1 scoring run before SHU closed out the set.
Emma Fink led the Friars with four kills, while Allison Barber recorded seven assists and three digs.
 
2ND SET:
• The Friars fell to the Pirates, 25-19.
• Providence matched its largest lead of the set at 15-13.
• The Pirates scored five-straight points to gain an 18-15 advantage.
Shaliyah Rhoden paced the Friars with six kills on 10 total attacking opportunities (.600).
Natalie Benson contributed five digs and Barber accumulated 13 assists.
 
3RD SET:
• Providence extended the match by earning a 25-22 victory in the third.
• Rhoden paced the Friars with eight kills on 20 attacking opportunities in the third (.300).
• Barber recorded 13 assists and eight digs.
 
4TH SET:
• Seton Hall held a four-point advantage late in the fourth (23-19), matching its largest lead of the set.
• The Friars rallied to score five-straight points and take a 24-23 lead.
• The set was tied three more times down the stretch before Providence claimed a 28-26 victory.
• Three players have five-or-more kills, led by Rhoden and Leitman, with six each.
• Maryann Boyle added five kills.
• Barber recorded 20 assists in the set and added eight digs.
Caroline LaMacchia contributed seven digs.
 
5TH SET:
• Neither team had more than a two-point advantage on the scoreboard in the deciding set.
• The Friars led 13-12 before SHU scored three-straight points to close out the set and win the match.
• Leitman recorded a team-high four kills on nine opportunities in the deciding set (.333).
 
NOTES / MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
• Rhoden recorded a season-high 23 kills in the match on 60 opportunities at the net (.250).
• It marks the third time this season she has recorded 20+ kills.
• Leitman notched her second double-double of the season on 15 digs and a season-high 18 kills.
• Barber completed the night with team-highs in assists (60) and digs (23).
• LaMacchia recorded a match-high of five service aces.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 against BIG EAST foe St. John's at 4:00 p.m.
