The 2019-20 season was marked by a record number of student season ticket holders.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -  Providence College men's basketball announced today (April 27) that the Providence College student section, known as the Friar Fanatics, has earned the 2020 Providence College men's basketball Duffy Dwyer Fan of the Year Award.

The 2019-20 season was marked by a record number of student season ticket holders (1,746) and strong attendance at all games played at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Friar Fanatics' dedication to Friar Athletics has made a difference every season, and this year was no exception.

"It's such an awesome feeling to be part of a group that truly is energized by the success of a sports team," Mia Carroll, Class of 2023, said.  "I felt so fortunate to be a part of the student section and lead the cheers as a freshman.  The energy was amazing and the Friar Fanatics' cheers really helped bring the student section together."

In addition to being loud supporters of the Chick-fil-A Fowl Shot, the Friar Fanatics successfully accomplished different themed games for the student section in an effort to build an exciting atmosphere that remains one of the best in the BIG EAST. One themed game was a "Beach Out The Dunk" which was successfully aligned with the announcement of the Friars participation in the 2020 Maui Jim Maui Invitational, which will occur November 23-25, 2020.

Friar Fanatic President senior Joe Haughey was proud of the student involvement this season.

"Being a part of Friar Fanatics this year was nothing short of outstanding," Haughey said.  "Being in the student section every game and coordinating some awesome events and promotions with the athletic department was an experience like no other. Helping create the insane atmosphere at the Dunk' and helping the Friars achieve their best BIG EAST finish in school history was so much fun and was a great end to my senior year."

The Friar men's basketball annual team awards have traditionally been announced at the team's end-of-the-season banquet in April each year.  This year, the awards will be announced one per day on Friars.com and via the team's social media accounts starting on Saturday, April 18 and continuing through Tuesday, April 28.

The Friars (19-12) entered the 2020 BIG EAST Tournament as hot as any team in the country.  The team had won six straight and eight of 10 games to close the regular season with a NET ranking of 37 and a team record 12 BIG EAST wins (12-6).  The squad finished fourth in league standings and was set to play fifth-seeded Butler on March 12 in the BIG EAST Tournament.  However, due to the Coronavirus outbreak the BIG EAST and NCAA Tournaments were canceled.  The Friars were projected to be a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
