Friars Looking To Capture Third BIG EAST Title: In the Friars' 40-year history at the BIG EAST Tournament, the team has captured the BIG EAST Championship title twice - 1994 and 2014. When they captured their first title, the Friars defeated Georgetown, 74-64, on March 13, 1994 in the championship game. In 2014, Providence earned a 65-58 win over Creighton in the championship game. Last season, the Friars posted a 1-1 mark in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Friar Tid Bits Entering Thursday's Game:
*The Friars have won six consecutive games and eight of their last 10 contests.
*The Friars' six straight BIG EAST wins ties the team's longest streak in league play (1987, 2004, 2017)
*The Friars have earned 12 BIG EAST wins for the first time in team history - 12-6 in BIG EAST play (7-2 at home, 5-4 on the road). Twelve wins is the most ever for a PC team in a BIG EAST season.
*The Friars clinched a bye in the First Round of the BIG EAST Tournament for the sixth time in the last seven years.

Friars To Play Butler On Thursday, March 12 In BIG EAST Quarterfinals: Thursday's game versus Butler will mark the third time the two teams have met in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Friars have posted a 2-0 mark in those games, including an 80-57 win last season as the eight seed in the 8/9 game. In the first meeting between the two teams in the BIG EAST Tournament, the fourth-seeded Friars earned a 74-60 win to open the tournament in 2016 versus Butler.

Friars All-Time Versus Butler: Thursday's game versus Butler will mark the 17th meeting all-time between the two teams. The Friars lead the all-time series, 12-4. PC has posted a 5-2 mark at home, a 5-2 mark at Butler and a 2-0 mark on neutral courts. In the first meeting ever between the two teams, the Friars defeated the Bulldogs, 65-56, on January 21, 2014 in Providence. Butler's first win in the series was a 68-64 victory in Providence on March 7, 2015. In the first meeting this season, Butler defeated the Friars, 70-58, in Providence. In the second game this season, the Friars earned a 65-61 win at Butler on February 1.

After Seven Years, Friars Have Third Best Record In BIG EAST Action: Since the formation of the new BIG EAST, the Friars have posted the third best mark in league play over the last seven years. The Friars' 70-56 mark (.556) trails only Villanova's 103- 23 record (.817) and Xavier's 74-52 record (.587).

Friars Earn At Least 10 BIG EAST Wins for Sixth Time In Last Seven Years: On March 7, the Friars defeated DePaul to improve to 12-6 in league play. It marks the sixth time in the last seven years that the Friars have won 10 or more games in BIG EAST play. The Friars' 12 wins in BIG EAST action this season is the team's all-time single season high.

Alpha Diallo All-Time At Madison Square Garden: In 10 career games at Madison Square Garden, New York City native Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) has averaged 14.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. His 18 points against Butler in the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament First Round on March 13, 2019 marked his third-highest scoring total at The Garden. In 2018, he scored a personal-best of 22 points at MSG in the BIG EAST Championship game against Villanova. He started the 2018 BIG EAST Tournament with 19 points against Creighton in the Quarterfinals.

Alpha Diallo In The BIG EAST Tournament: Senior Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) has played six games in the BIG EAST Tournament during his career with the Friars. He has reached double figures in the scoring column in each game. In six BIG EAST Tournament games, he has averaged an impressive 16.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists. In 2018, he was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team after averaging 19.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in three games.

Ed Cooley All-Time Coaching PC At Madison Square Garden: Head Coach Ed Cooley has posted a 13-8 mark all-time as the Friar head coach at Madison Square Garden. He is 8-7 in the BIG EAST Tournament, 3-1 versus St. John's in regular season action and 2-0 in the 2017 2K Classic.

Diallo Leads Team In Scoring And Rebounding: Senior forward Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) is averaging 14.1 points and 7.8 rebounds through 31 games this season. He leads the team in scoring and rebounding. Diallo has posted a double-double in nine of the Friars' 31 games, including a 35-point, 10-rebound effort versus No. 10/10 Seton Hall on February 15. The 35 points marked a career-high. He has registered 24 double-doubles in his four seasons at Providence.

Diallo Named All-BIG EAST Second Team: It was announced on March 8 that Providence College senior forward Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. For Diallo it marked the second consecutive season that he has been named All-BIG EAST as he earned second team honors in 2018-19.

Holt Named Recipient of BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award: It was announced on March 9 that graduate student Emmitt Holt (Rochester, N.Y.) became the first Friar ever to earn the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award. He shared the award with Butler senior Kamar Baldwin and Georgetown senior Jagan Mosely. Holt, who missed almost two full seasons of action due to abdominal surgery, has returned for a sixth season and is averaging 4.8 points and 3.7 points per game. 

Duke Scoring And Assisting: Sophomore guard David Duke (Providence, R.I.) ranks second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) and he ranks first in assists (3.1 apg). Duke registered a career day when he scored 36 points in a 78-74 loss at Creighton on January 18. He recorded his BIG EAST career high when he posted eight assists in the Friars' win over Georgetown on December 31.

Pipkins A Key To Friars' Late Season Surge: Graduate student Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) has averaged 19.2 points per game during the team's current six-game winning streak. He scored 23 points in an 80-74 win over Xavier on March 4. He scored a game-high 27 points as he was 4-8 from three-point territory and 9-10 from the free-throw line in the team's 58-54 win at Villanova on February 29. On February 22, he scored 24 points, grabbed four rebounds and made three steals in the team's 84-72 win over Marquette. He has led the Friars to a 10-2 mark when he registers four or more assists in a game. Pipkins had a game-high 22 points, including a 10-10 performance from the free-throw line in the team's 65-61 win at No. 16/17 Butler on February 1. Pipkins was 6-6 from line in the final 27 seconds of the game to seal the win. Pipkins, who is in his first season with the Friars after transferring from UMass, is averaging 10.8 points per game. He leads the league in free-throw shooting at 89.7 percent (74-82).

Diallo Surpassed 1,000 Career Points: Senior Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) has recorded 1,591 career points in 130 games (12.2 ppg). He became the 50th player in Friar history to score 1,000 or more career points. Diallo ranks 14th all-time in scoring at PC.

Friars All-Time Versus Top-25 Teams: The Friars have posted a 121-269 (.310) mark all-time versus top-25 teams, including a 5-4 mark this season.

Breed Signs NLI To Attend Providence: Ed Cooley announced on November 13 that student-athlete Alyn Breed (Powder Springs, Ga.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2020. Breed attends IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Breed, a 6-foot-3-inch, 185-pound shooting guard, enters his first season at IMG. In 2018-19, he attended McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Ga. Breed, who averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists last season, helped lead McEachern to a 32-0 mark with wins over eight nationally ranked high schools. The squad captured the Georgia Class 7A State Championship. The team also won tournament titles at the City of Palms Classic, the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions and the Hoophall Classic. In the summer of 2019, Breed played for the AOT Running Rebels.

Ed Cooley And Four Friars Help USA Pan Am Games Team To A Bronze Medal In August: A select team of men's basketball standouts from the BIG EAST Conference represented the United States at the 2019 Pan American Games. Head Coach Ed Cooley served as the head coach of the team and led the squad to a Bronze Medal. Four Friars were members of the team -- Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.), David Duke (Providence, R.I.), A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Ma.) and Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.). It represented the first time a team from a single Division l conference represented the U.S. in the sport of men's basketball in Pan American Games com- petition. Diallo led the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounding 5.6 (rpg).

Ed Cooley Ranks Third On The PC All-Time Win List: With the Friars' win versus Butler on March 9, 2019, Ed Cooley recorded his 161st victory as the Friar Head Coach and moved into third place on the all-time win list for PC Head Coaches. The two all-time winningest Friar head coaches are: Joe Mullaney (319-164), and Dave Gavitt (209-84). Cooley has a 181-122 mark in nine seasons as the Friars head coach.

"DG" Patch On Friar Uniforms: In memory of former Friar Head Coach Dave Gavitt the Friars have worn a "DG" patch on their uni- forms since the 2011-12 season. Gavitt led PC and Eastern basketball into the modern age. In 10 seasons as the head coach of the Friars, Gavitt led PC to 209 wins, including eight consecutive 20-win seasons, five NCAA appearances, three NIT appearances and five New England Coach of the Year honors. He led the Friars to 23 wins over Top-20 teams. His 1973 team made it to Final Four. In 1971, Gavitt was named Director of Athletics at PC, a position he held until 1982 when he resigned to be the director of the BIG EAST Conference. He also was named Head Coach of the 1980 USA Olympic basketball team. He was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

Friars In Overtime: The Friars recorded a 1-0 mark in overtime games this season. They have registered a 65-67 mark all-time in overtime games.

Providence College Basketball: The 2019-20 campaign marks the 93rd season of basketball at Providence College. Since the pro- gram started in 1926-27, Providence has posted a 1,482-996 mark, good for a .598 winning percentage. The Friars have made the NCAA Tournament 20 times and the National Invitation Tournament on 20 occasions.
