EAST MEADOW, N.Y.– The Providence College Friars competed in the 2020 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 26-29 in East Meadow, N.Y. The Friars set 21 program records over the course of the four-day meet.
Day 1
The women's 200-yard medley relay, consisting of
Sally Alrutz,
Hannah Weber,
Katie Thornton, and
Lauren Zawacki, set a new program record with their time of 1:44.42.
The men's team tallied three new program records.
Andrew Ferrell improved on the program record in the 200-yard freestyle. In the 800-yard freestyle relay,
Andrew Ferrell,
Jack Armstrong,
PK Brannigan and
Justin Viotto set a new program record with a 6:44.96. At 1:33.51,
Aidan Hughes,
Kevin Hood,
Andrew Ferrell and
Brian Cantin set a new program best in the 200-yard medley relay.
Day 2
Lauren Zawacki, who already held the program record in the 50-yard freestyle, improved upon her own mark in this morning's prelims and then bettered it again in the finals. Zawacki reached the wall in 23.81. The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of
Katie Thornton,
Taylor Loud,
Margie Keenan and
Lauren Zawacki set a program record, notching a time of 1:35.24.
For the second consecutive day
Andrew Ferrell found his way onto the program all-time leaderboard. This time besting his own 200-yard IM mark by half of a second. Ferrell's record stands at 1:50.78.
Aidan Hughes outpaced Mark Tartaglione's 24-year-old record in the 50-yard freestyle. Hughes set the new standard at 21.13.
Brian Cantin,
Aidan Hughes, Phil Goeckel, and
PK Brannigan teamed up to improve the 200-yard freestyle relay record, now standing at 1:22.93.
Day 3
Third to the wall in today's event final,
Sally Alrutz bested her own record in the 100-yard backstroke from earlier this season. Alrutz improved the record to 56.01. In the 100-yard butterfly prelims, Lily Dimmig outpaced
Katie Thornton's record. The record now stands at 56.37. In the women's closing event of the day, Alrutz, along with
Hannah Weber, Dimmig, and
Lauren Zawacki set a new program standard in the 400-yard medley relay.
Justin Viotto placed third in the 400-yard IM, one spot better this his fourth-place finish from his freshman campaign. His 3:55.77 improved his own record by more than two seconds.
Andrew Ferrell continues to leave his mark on the record book, tallying his third consecutive day setting a program record. Ferrell's 49.86 in the 100-yard butterfly is the fastest in the school's history.

Kevin Hood, Ferrell, and
PK Brannigan combined for a 3:24.80 in the 400-yard medley relay, a program record.
Day 4
Sally Alrutz added her name to the record book again today, this time swimming a program best 2:01.40 in the 200-yard backstroke. The record was previously held by Michele Tamburo.
Katie Thornton,
Taylor Loud, Jenny Bankes and
Lauren Zawacki outpaced the program's 400-yard freestyle relay record. The quartet combined for a 3:28.20 in the event.
The men's side was led by
Justin Viotto and his two program records. In a silver medal effort Viotto swam a blistering 15:34.07 in the 1650-yard freestyle, shattering Jed Michnowicz's 24-year-old record by more than 30 seconds. Viotto returned to the pool to improve upon his own 200-yard butterfly record, notching a 1:49.21 in the event's preliminary round.
Aidan Hughes recorded a 1:50.87 in the 200-yard backstroke, narrowly edging his 1:50.91 record from earlier this season. Hughes, along with
Jack Armstrong,
PK Brannigan and
Andrew Ferrell recorded a program best in the 400-yard freestyle relay: 3:04.22.
