Providence College Volleyball Welcomes Merrimack For Home Opener

PROVIDENCE R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team is set to host the Merrimack College Warriors for their home opener tomorrow, September 4, at 6:00 p.m. The match will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
 
SCOUTING THE FRIARS: The Friars have started the season 1-1 after defeating George Mason in straight sets and losing to East Carolina in five sets in Fairfax, Va. this past Sunday. The Friars will look to defend home court for the first time this season.
 
Junior Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) posted two double-doubles on Sunday after 49 assists and 11 digs against East Carolina and 31 assists and 11 digs against George Mason.
 
The Friars received significant contributions from two newcomers in the opening matches. Freshman Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) led both matches in kills and total attacks. She posted 20 kills on 53 total attacks against East Carolina and 17 kills on 40 total attacks against George Mason. Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) led the Friars in digs in both matches, with 17 and 13.
 
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS:The Merrimack College Warriors will begin their first season in NCAA Division I with a trip to Providence this Wednesday. The Warriors play in the Northeast Conference where they were projected ninth this season. Last year, as members of NCAA Division II and the Northeast-10 Conference, the Warriors were 5-21 overall and 3-11 in conference.
 
Senior Catherine Flaherty lead the Warriors in kills (199), points per set (2.77) and total attacks (704).
 
Seniors Sydney Buran and Rosie Sperduto led the team in assists with 255 and 240, respectively.
 
The Warriors welcome seven freshmen to the roster.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:The Friars will head to Morehead, Ky. for the 2019 Morehead State Eagle Challenge featuring Georgia State, Presbyterian and Morehead State. Providence will play twice on Friday and once on Saturday.
