Field Hockey Opens BIG EAST Conference Action Against No. 22 Old Dominion On Friday

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College field hockey team will host No. 22 Old Dominion at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. on Friday, Sept. 20. The match marks the BIG EAST Conference opener for both programs and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.  The Friars will close the weekend with a non-conference road match at Fairfield University on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
 
 
PROVIDENCE VS. #22 OLD DOMINION
All-time series: Old Dominion leads series, 6-1

Match recap (2018 Season): Old Dominion scored its first goal at 18:26 of the first half and rolled out to a 3-0 lead. Providence cut the deficit to 3-1 as Kara Sanford (Hazleton, Pa.) scored off a penalty corner, but the Monarchs closed the game with three unanswered goals for a 6-1 win. Old Dominion held a 25-4 advantage in shots and a 12-4 edge in penalty corners. Erin Huffman and Rebecca Birch combined to score five of the Monarchs' six goals. 
 
PROVIDENCE VS. FAIRFIELD

Match recap (2018 Season): Fairfield took a 1-0 lead at the 4:26 mark after picking up a turnover deep in the Friars' defensive zone. Providence tied the game just over 10-minutes later as Amanda Collins scored her first collegiate goal. Mary O'Reilly was credited with the eventual game-winning goal at 32:22. She put her initial shot into the post, but collected the rebound and scored, unassisted. Providence College held a 13-9 advantage in shots, while the Stags held the edge in penalty corners (8-6).
 
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE
• Providence enters the weekend with a 4-1 overall record. It marks the best five-game start to the season since 2006 when the Friars started the schedule unbeaten at 5-0.
 
• Providence is 1-1 vs. nationally-ranked opponents this season and will face their third ranked foe, No. 22 Old Dominion, on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6:00 p.m.
 
• The Friars fell to 13th-ranked Boston College, 2-1, in their season opener on Aug. 30. Since then, the squad has reeled off four-straight wins.
 
• On Sept. 1, the Friars picked up a 5-4 overtime victory against then-No. 24 Maine in Orono, Maine. 
 
• Providence's overtime victory against No. 24 Maine marked the team's first win over a ranked opponent since Aug. 25, 2017.  On that day, the Friars also defeated No. 24 Maine, 1-0, in Providence, R.I.
 
• Eleven players on the roster have scored at least one point, including seven different goal scorers.
 
Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.), Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand), Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) and Kara Sanford (Hazleton, Pa.) have each tallied a team-best four points on two goals.  Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.) leads Providence in assists, with two.
 
• Providence has recorded three-straight shut-out victories heading into this Friday's match and have not yielded a goal to its opponents in 212:33 minutes of action dating back to Sept 1 in the fourth quarter vs. Maine.  
 
Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) has played 333 minutes in the cage this season and has a 1.08 goals against average and a .812 save percentage. She leads the BIG EAST Conference in save percentage and ranks 10thin the nation among NCAA Division I goalkeepers.
 
• The Friars were picked to finish third in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Aug. 23.
 
 
SCOUTING #22 OLD DOMINION
• Old Dominion enters Friday's match against Providence with a 4-1 record and is ranked 22ndin the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll.
 
• ODU fell to No. 11 Virginia, 3-0, in its season opener, but has rattled off four-straight victories since then.  
 
• The Monarchs are 2-1 vs. nationally-ranked opponents, having lost to No. 11 Virginia (3-0) and earning wins over No. 25 William & Mary (3-1) and No. 17 Penn State (2-1).
 
• Riley Taylor (six points), Rebecca Birch (six points) and Erin Huffman (five points) have combined for 17 of the Monarchs' 25 points, including six of the team's nine goals this season. Birch and Huffman were selected as members of the 2019 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
 
• Old Dominion was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, with 34 points. The Monarchs sit just one-point shy of the Friars, who collected 34 points for third place in the preseason standings.
 
• Cam MacGillivray has played 320 minutes in the cage for ODU this season and owns a 1.09 goals against average and a .773 save percentage.  She has recorded two shut-out victories this season vs. American (1-0, 2OT) and VCU (2-0).
 
 
SCOUTING FAIRFIELD
• Fairfield is currently 5-1 on the season and will face Columbia in Fairfield, Conn. on Friday, Sept. 20 before hosting Providence on Sept. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
 
• The Stags dropped their season opener vs. UMass Lowell (3-0) but have earned victories in each of their last five games.
 
• Fairfield is 1-0 vs. nationally-ranked opponents, having picked up a 3-2 (OT) victory against then-No. 13 Boston College on Sept. 1.
 
• Fairfield has a balanced offensive attack, featuring seven different goal scorers through six games. Luzi Persiehl and Page Lowry have tallied a team-best three goals each.  All three of Persiehl's goals have been game winners.
 
• Zoe Rosen has played 353 minutes in goal for Fairfield and owns a 1.19 goals against average and a 0.781 save percentage.
 
• Julianna Kratz and Danielle Profita lead the team with eight points apiece. Both players have collected two goals and a team-best four assists this season.
 
• Through six games, the Stags have earned 38 penalty corners compared to their opponents' 34 offensive corners. Sixteen of Fairfield's 38 corners have been awarded during the fourth quarter.
 
• The Stags have scored 15 goals this season, with seven coming in the fourth quarter and overtime.
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will return to action with a pair of home games at Lennon Family Field against BIG EAST foe Temple (Sept. 27) and ACC opponent Louisville (Sept. 29).
