PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College field hockey team fell to No. 22 Old Dominion, 4-3, in a game that featured two scoreless overtime periods and a shootout. It marked the Friars' second-straight 2OT, shootout. Last Friday, Providence defeated Lafayette, 1-0, in a shootout. The game between Providence and ODU marked the BIG EAST opener for both programs. Providence dropped to 4-2 (0-1 BIG EAST), while the nationally-ranked Monarchs improved to 5-1 (1-0 BIG EAST).
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
• Old Dominion started the game strong, scoring two early goals in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead through the first 6:19 of play.
• ODU's Alexandria Brewer struck first at 4:38, unassisted.
• Rebecca Birch netted the Monarchs' second goal at 6:19 off a feed from Riley Taylor.
• Providence settled in during the second quarter to outshoot Old Dominion, 8-0.

Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) put Providence on the board at 17:36 during a penalty corner to make it a 2-1 game. She was assisted by senior
Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) and
Maddie Babineau (Milton, Ontario).
• At halftime, Providence led in shots, 8-6, and held an 8-1 edge in penalty corners.
• Providence tied the game, 2-2, in the third quarter at the 42:46 mark of the game.
Olivia Ward (North Havelock, New Zealand) took a feed from Mendez in the center of the circle, spun around her defender and fired her third goal of the year into the back of the cage.
• The game remained tied, 2-2, at the conclusion of the third quarter.
• In the final frame, ODU claimed a 3-2 lead as Birch scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Marlee McClendon.
• O'Reilly leveled the score in the final minutes of play in the fourth quarter (4-4) as she notched her second goal of the season. Mendez was credited with the assist as she fed O'Reilly the ball just inside the circle. O'Reilly took a couple touches on the ball before firing a low shot into the cage.
• Old Dominion combined for four shots and three penalty corners in the overtime sessions, but were unable to convert.
• Providence had one attempt on the cage in the second overtime, but that chance sailed wide.
• The first round of the shootout did not produce a winner, as each team converted one attempt.
• In the sudden death round, Providence scored on its first attempt, followed by a goal by ODU to even the shootout.
• Providence was unable to convert on its next attempt, and ODU's Taylor notched the deciding goal.
