Field Hockey Hits The Road To Face Lafayette

The Friars and Leopards will square off at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 in Easton, Pa.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College field hockey team will travel to Easton, Pa. to take on non-conference foe Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m.
 
 PROVIDENCE VS. LAFAYETTE
All-time series: Providence leads series, 2-0
Last meeting: Providence 2, Lafayette 0 (Oct. 14, 2018)
Match highlights: Lafayette held the advantage in shots (8-6), shot on goal (6-4) and penalty corners (5-3) in the last meeting between the two programs. However, the Friars were able to take advantage of their opportunities to claim a 2-0 victory.  Providence's Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) notched a shutout in goal with six saves.  Sydney Cramer (Sciota, Pa.) and Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.) each tallied one goal for the Friars.  Lafayette pulled goalkeeper Sarah Park with 5:03 remaining in the match, in favor of an extra attacker, but the Leopards were unable to find the back of the cage.
 
 SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE
• Providence enters the weekend with a 3-1 overall record. The Friars fell to 13th-ranked Boston College, 2-1, in their season opener on Aug. 30. Since then, the squad has reeled off three-straight wins.
 
• On Sept. 1, the Friars picked up a 5-4 overtime victory against 24th-ranked Maine in Orono, Maine. 
 
• Providence's overtime victory against No. 24 Maine marked the team's first win over a ranked opponent since Aug. 25, 2017.  On that day, the Friars also defeated No. 24 Maine, 1-0, in Providence, R.I.
 
• Eleven players on the roster have scored at least one point, including seven different goal scorers.
 
Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.), Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand), Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) and Kara Sanford (Hazleton, Pa.) have each tallied a team-best four points on two goals.  Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.) leads Providence in assists, with two.
 
• Last week, Providence recorded back-to-back shut-out victories against Bryant (2-0) and Brown (3-0). Goalkeeper Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) registered eight saves, including five stops against Brown. Sanford notched the first multi-goal game of her career against Brown, with two goals.  
 
• Rice and Sanford each earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition on Sept. 9. It marked Rice's second-straight appearance on the leagues list of weekly award winners.
 
• Rice has played 253 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 1.42 goals against average and a 0.769 save percentage.
 
• The Friars were picked to finish third in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Aug. 23.
 
 SCOUTING LAFAYETTE
• Lafayette enters the match against Providence with a 1-3 overall record. Two of its three losses came against nationally-ranked opponents. 
 
• The Leopards defeated VCU, 2-1 in the 2019 season opener before dropping each of their last three games to No. 18 Syracuse (3-2, 2OT), Appalachian State (3-2) and No. 20 Liberty (5-0).
 
• Seven different players have recorded at least one point this season, including four different goal scorers.
 
• Freshman Felicitas Hannes leads the offense with five points on two goals and one assist.  Sam Di Maio ranks second on the team in points (four) with two goals.
 
• Sarah Park has played 251 minutes in the cage for Lafayette and owns a 2.87 goals against average and a 0.676 save percentage.
 
• The Leopards returned five of their top-six scorers from a season ago, including Molly McAndrew, Lisa van der Geest and Caroline Turnbull, who each tallied double-digits in the points column.
 
• Van der Geest, who earned Third-Team All-America honors in 2018, was named Preseason Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and joined McAndrew on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team. 
 
 WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Friday, Sept. 20 against BIG EAST Conference foe Old Dominion. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. The Friars will close the weekend with a road trip to Fairfield, Conn. to take on the Stags in non-conference play at 1:00 p.m.
