EASTON, PA.– The Providence College field hockey team battled Lafayette College through 80-straight minutes of scoreless hockey, including regulation and two overtimes, before defeating the Leopards in a shootout. The Friars improved to 4-1 on the season, while Lafayette dropped to 1-4 on the year.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence put on the offensive pressure early in the match, recording two penalty corners and three shots in the first 5:48 of action.
- Lafayette was awarded its first penalty corner of the game at 8:49 and yielded the Leopards first shot attempt of the night, but it was blocked by the defense at the top of the circle.

Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) had two attempts at the cage to give Providence the lead in the second quarter. The first attempt sailed wide of the cage with 5:26 left on the clock, and her second was denied by the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation with just over 2:30 remaining before halftime.
- The two teams were deadlocked, 0-0, after 30 minutes of play. Providence held the advantage in shots (6-4) and shots on goal (3-1). Each team recorded three penalty corners in the first half.
- Providence earned back-to-back penalty corners at 37:19 and 37:51, but shot attempts by
Maddie Babineau (Milton, Ontario) and
Corinne Kenney (Warrington, Pa.) were denied.
- The Friars held the majority of possession in the third quarter, but Lafayette built offensive momentum with just three minutes to play in the frame, recording three penalty corners and two shots on goal.

Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) notched two of her three saves in the third quarter and the two teams went to final 15 minutes of play tied, 0-0.
- The Friars earned back-to-back corners at 57:02 and 57:10, but could not find the back of the cage for the go-ahead goal.
- Rice kept the game level with her fifth save of the night at the 58:18 mark.

Sophia Pompeo (Portland, Maine) had the last look at scoring in regulation, but the Friars' rookie was denied by Lafayette goalkeeper Sarah Park with her fifth save of the night.
- At the end of regulation, the Friars led in shots (11-9), while shots on goal (5-5) and penalty corners (7-7) were even for both teams.
- Providence earned two penalty corners in the first overtime, but were unable to capitalize on either opportunity.
- With 4:00 minutes remaining in the first OT, Lafayette had a player sent off the field with a green card. While up an extra player, the Friars fired the lone shot of the frame, as sophomore
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) fired a reverse stick attempt on cage, but was turned away by Park.
- Lafayette earned two penalty corners in the second overtime, but also were unable to cross the goal line as the match went to a shootout.
- Providence won the shootout, 3-1.
- The Friars improved to 4-1 on the year, including a 2-0 mark in overtime matches.
- Providence also improved to 10-3 in overtime games, dating back to the 2016 campaign.
- Rice has not allowed a goal in 212:33 minutes of play, dating back to Sept. 1 in the fourth quarter vs. Maine.
