PROVIDENCE R.I.- The BIG EAST Conference has announced the winners of the 2018-19 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service. Providence College's Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) was honored for women's track and field.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
While the format of the awards allows for only one declared winner in each sport category, the selection of the recipients proves each year to be a challenge for the FAR Council, as candidate nominees represent exceptional student-athletes who excel in academics, service, and athletics, and are outstanding representatives of their schools and the Conference.
Paladino took home five All-American honors over her three-year stint at Providence College. Paladino claimed First-Team All-America honors all three years in the mile for Indoor Track with a third-place finish in 2019 with a time of 4:38.44. Paladino also earned two honorable mention All-America honors in the 1,500 meters for outdoor track. The Morgantown, West Virginia native was nominated for the 2019 NCAA Women of the Year from Providence College along with winning the 2019 Northeast Region Female Athlete of the Year and Providence College Female Athlete of the Year, twice. The three-time BIG EAST champion and eight-time All-BIG EAST performer holds the Providence College and New England Collegiate record in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:42.13.
Off the track, Paladino graduated from Providence College in May 2019 with a bachelor's of science in applied physics and a grade point average of 3.34. Paladino earned four USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors for cross country and track and field. Paladino was a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll five times and earned BIG EAST All-Academic honors for 2016-2017.
