AUSTIN, TEXAS- The Providence College women's track team had two athletes compete in day two of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, June 6. Senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) competed in the prelims of the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va.) competed in the 1,500 meters prelims. To qualify for the finals in each of their respective events, athletes must place top-five in the heat or run the next two fastest times.
Ilarda raced in the first heat of the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Ilarda positioned herself towards the front of the pack early in the race, taking the lead for the first three laps. She was part of a lead pack of five that broke away from the rest of the field with a mile remaining. Ilarda would go on to finish sixth in her heat in a time of 10:00.39, qualifying her one time for the finals on Saturday, June 8 at 6:54 p.m. (ET).
Earlier in the meet, Paladino raced in the second heat of the women's 1,500 meters. The race was a tactical one from the beginning, as the entire field remained bunched together for the majority of the race. Paladino would go on to finish 6th in her heat in a time of 4:14.84, running a season best.
Junior Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) will race for the Friars on the final day of the championships. Wheeler will compete in the 5,000 meter finals on Saturday, June 8 at 8:25 p.m. (ET).
