Providence Track and Field Competes In Day One Of The UCF Black And Gold Challenge

The Friars had 11 athletes compete in various track and field events on March 15.

ORLANDO, FLA. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field team competed on the first day of the UCF Black and Gold Challenge at the University of Central Florida on Friday, March 15. The Friars came out with four individual winners on the day.
 
Graduate student Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.) started the Friars off with an individual win in the men's 1,500 meters. Wyman took the lead from the gun and kept a strong pace. He would be challenged with two laps to go but sat behind until the final lap. Wyman made a huge surge with 400 meters to go to take the victory. He would win in a time of 3:47.86, running a three second personal best. Michael O'Leary (Saint James, N.Y.) and Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) were not far behind Wyman finishing third (3:52.60) and fourth (3:54.83) respectively.     
 
David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.), Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.) and Ian Steller (Providence, R.I.) were the highlights in the men's 5,000 meters. The trio took the race from the start and worked together as the race progressed. Rosas would come away with the win outkicking Scola in the last 100 meters. Rosas would run in a time of 14:53.35 and Scola would finish right behind in a time of 14:54.44. Steller would place third in a time 15:00.02. 
 
Senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Western Australia) took the victory in the women's 2,000 meter steeplechase. Ilarda took out the race hard and never looked back. She would run a time of 6:26.52. 
 
Graduate student Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.) was another individual for the women in the 5,000 meters. Rome gapped the field in the first 200 meters and expanded her lead as the race progressed. She would go on to win in a time of 16:43.61, four minutes ahead of the next collegiate competitor.

Chris Shanahan – Javelin, 8th, 52.41 meters
Bridget Mitchell – 1,500 meters, 9th, 4:48.77
Dara Cuffe – 1,500 meters, 13th, 4:54.79

Providence will be back in action for day two of the UCF Black and Gold Challenge tomorrow, Saturday, March 16. The first event for the Friars' begins at 12:00 p.m.
