PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced on Monday (Feb. 4) 20 NCAA Division I men's hockey players named semifinalists for the 67
th Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England. Providence College's
Hayden Hawkey (Parker, Colo.) and
Josh Wilkins (Raleigh, N.C.) were named semifinalists for the award.
Twelve teams are represented in the slate of candidates that includes nine forwards and three goalies from Hockey East; two forwards, two defensemen and two goalies from ECAC Hockey; and one forward and one defenseman from Atlantic Hockey.
Senior goaltender
Hayden Hawkey has started in 27-of-28 games this season for the Friars, registering a 1.96 GAA and .912 save percentage. The five shutouts this season rank second among NCAA goaltenders, while his 13 career shutouts are tied with Jon Gillies for the Providence College record. Hawkey's 63 career wins sit two shy of the program record held by Mario Proulx '84.
Junior forward
Josh Wilkins currently leads the Friars in scoring with 28 points (9-19-28), which ranks fourth among all Hockey East players. A Hobey Baker candidate, Wilkins has totaled 31 points in each of his first two seasons at Providence College and sits at 90 career points in 105 games played. This season, Wilkins held the nation's longest point streak at 13 games spanning from Nov. 10, 2018 - Jan. 15, 2019.
The nation's oldest nationally-recognized college hockey honor, the Walter Brown Award was established in 1953 by the members of the 1933 Massachusetts Rangers, the first American team ever to win the World Championship Tournament. Brown coached the Rangers to the title in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where the team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime in the championship game.
