Women’s Soccer Prevails In Double Overtime Against Marquette, 2-1

Elayna Grillakis scored her third golden goal of the season and sixth career goal.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team improved to 7-3-1 this season after prevailing in double overtime on the road against Marquette, 2-1, on Tuesday, Oct. 3 in Milwaukee, Wis. Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) scored the game-winner in the 106th minute for her third golden goal of the season. Providence now holds a 5-0-1 record in overtime games this season.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
- Providence used all 45 minutes in the first half to gain a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room. Alessandra Arace (Pittsfield, Mass.) played a ball into the box from right in front of the midfield line on the right side of the field, Kelsie Cummings (Millbury, Mass.) gathered the ball near the penalty mark before putting a right-footed shot off the goalkeepers hands and in the top left corner.
- The goal marked Kelsie Cummings first career goal in a Friar uniform after tallying her first career assist in the season opener against UConn.
- Senior Alessandra Arace picked up her fourth career assist and eighth career point on the feed to Cummings.
- Providence led in shots, 5-4, at halftime.
- The Friars nearly ended the game in regulation before the Golden Eagles finding the equalizer in the 79th minute. Emily Hess played a cross from the left sideline that Alyssa Bombacino headed near the six-yard box, Alex Campana finished the shot near post past Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.)
- Sophomore Elayna Grillakis sent the Friars home with three points in the 106th minute of play. Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) beat the defender on the right side before playing a ball to Grillakis that she hit off the goalkeeper on the first attempt, before burying the second attempt on the goal line.
- The goal tied Grillakis for the team-lead in goals (five) with Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.). It also marked her third golden goal of the season.
- Providence improves to 7-3-1 on the season and 5-0-1 in overtime games.
