Women’s Soccer Hosts No. 11 Georgetown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will host No. 11 Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 6 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The last time Providence hosted Georgetown at The Chap, the Friars upset then No. 15 Georgetown, 1-0. Providence is currently on its season-long four game win streak after defeating Marquette in double overtime, 2-1, on Thursday, Oct. 3. The game will mark Alumni Day for the women's soccer program and be a part of the athletic department's annual Pink Out game.
 
A Win Streak Will End… Sunday's match will be between the last two remaining unbeaten teams in the BIG EAST, Providence and Georgetown sit at 2-0 respectively. The Friars and Hoyas have also combined to win 10 straight matches as Providence enters Sunday on a four-game winning streak compared to the Hoyas' six-game streak. The Friars have outscored their opponents, 9-2, through the four-game streak.
 
Providence's second BIG EAST win came in the 106th minute against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. when sophomore Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) scored her third golden goal of the year and sixth career goal. The goal tied her for the team-lead in goals (five) with Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.). Kelsie Cummings (Millbury, Mass.) scored her first career goal in the 45th minute on a feed from Alessandra Arace (Pittsfield, Mass.) to gain a 1-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles found the equalizer in the 79th minute before Providence prevailed in double overtime with the victory. Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) recorded five saves on the night to improve to 7-3-1 this season in net with a 0.60 goals against average.
 
Offensive Breakout… Providence scored a season-best four goals against St. John's in the team's shutout victory on Sept. 28 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium to open its BIG EAST schedule. The game marked the first time this season that the margin of victory/defeat was larger than one goal. The Friars improved to 5-1 this season on home turf, and 13-2 over their last 15 games at The Chap.
 
Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) scored the first goal for the Friars and four different players tallied a goal on the night overall. McNulty's goal marked her team-best fifth goal of the season and 18th of her career. Chloe Ortolano (Norwalk, Conn.) gave Providence a 2-0 cushion in the 44th minute of play. She scored her first career goal in a Friar uniform on just her second shot this season. After scoring six goals in her 2018 campaign for Providence, junior Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) netted her first goal of the season just 18 seconds into the second half. Sophomore Elayna Grillakis capped off the scoring in the 52nd minute with her fourth goal of the season. Providence outshot the Red Storm, 14-8. Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) earned a combined shutout with Caroline Drinkwater (Duxbury, Mass.). Hogan recorded six saves in the victory and was subbed out in the 84th minute for the first time since Oct. 26, 2017 against Creighton.
 
Overtime Heroes… Six of the Friars 11 matches have been decided in overtime this season and they have posted a 5-0-1 mark. Prior to the overtime win over Marquette, Providence's most recent overtime game came against Northeastern with a 2-1 victory on Sept. 22. The Friars gave up a goal in the final minute of the first half. Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) knotted the game at one goal apiece after scoring her second penalty kick goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) emerged as the hero in the sixth minute of overtime. She gathered the ball at the top of the box before ripping a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner of the net.

Lonestar Statement… The Friars matched up with the Texas Longhorns on Thursday, Sept. 19 in Austin, Texas for the first time in program history. Texas was previously 3-0 against BIG EAST programs this season prior to Providence handing them a 1-0 loss in overtime. Eight minutes into the first overtime period, Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) sent Providence home with the golden goal victory. Olivia Lucia (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) played the ball to Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) on the end line before Birchwell crossed it to Grillakis to the left of the penalty mark. Grillakis slotted home the game-winner with a right-footed one-timer to the far post. It marked the third goal of Grillakis' career, and second game-winning goal this season. It marked the fourth assist of Birchwell's fourth assist of her career and first this season and Lucia's second career assist. Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) kept the game scoreless for her third shutout of the season after tallying seven saves.
 
One-Goal Affairs… Ten of the Friars' 11 matches this season have been decided by one goal or less, with one draw on their record. On Sunday, Sept. 15 Providence fell to its cross-town rival Brown by a 1-0 score, the Bears scored the game-winner in the 30th minute. Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) tallied six saves on the afternoon while Providence outshot the opposition, 15-12. Alexis Rothmann (Norwell, Mass.) led the offensive push with four shots out of the midfield.
 
Road Battle… Providence battled to a 1-1 draw on the campus of Boston College on Thursday, Sept. 12. The Eagles gained the lead in the 56th minute after Gianna Mitchell finished a header in the box. The Friars answered with a header goal of their own in the 88th minute. Angie Suaza (Nashua, N.H.) lofted a free kick from the right corner that swept across the box, and Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) finished with a header near post. The assist marked Suaza's first career point in a Friar uniform and McNulty with a team-leading third goal of the season. Hogan recorded five saves on the night. The Eagles entered the match with a 6-0-0 record.

Road Schedule Begins… The Friars traveled to Piscataway, N.J. to take on the Scarlet Knights before falling 1-0 in regulation. Possession remained equal throughout the match but Rutgers took the lead in the 62nd minute. The Scarlet Knights played a long ball into the box, and the ball deflected off Hogan's hands before Julia Aronov put it away in the six-yard box. Providence had a chance to equalize in the 87th minute off a corner kick, but was able to convert on three separate shots in the box.
 
Opening Homestand… The Friars went 8-1 last season on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Providence posted a 3-1 record at The Chap to open the 2019 season. Providence opened with a 2-1 win over UConn on Aug. 22 when Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) picked up right where she left off, after tallying 10 goals and four assists last season. She put the Friars in front in the 38th minute after finishing a cross off the foot of Kelsie Cummings (Millbury, Mass.) just outside the six-yard box. Cummings' assist marked the first of her career in a Friar uniform after playing in 19 games last season.
 
Providence took a 2-0 lead into the half after junior Christina Rodgers (Scotch Plains, N.J.) converted a penalty kick in the 43rd minute for her third career goal and first since her freshman campaign. The BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, Shelby Hogan, prevented a late surge by the Huskies to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
 
The Friars bounced back after a 1-0 loss to UMass on Aug. 25 by defeating Hartford one minute into overtime on Aug. 29. Katelyn Vieira (Warwick, R.I.) drew a foul in the 18-yard box in the 91st minute, Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted for her first penalty kick goal of her career and second career goal overall.
 
Friars in 2018… The Friars finished with an 11-6-3 overall record and 4-3-2 mark in the BIG EAST Conference during the 2018 season. Providence finished tied for fourth in conference play and made a run to the BIG EAST Semifinal for the second-consecutive season. Since Sam Lopes was hired in 2014, the team has recorded a winning record in five-straight seasons.  
 
A program record five Friars earned All-BIG EAST recognition at the conclusion of the last season. Katie Day was the lone Friar on the All-BIG EAST First Team. It marked the second-consecutive season she was listed on the First Team and second player in program history to accomplish that feat. Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.), Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.), and Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.) were named to the Second Team while Hannah Morgan (Berwyn, Pa.) represented Providence on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
 
Friars Picked Third in the BIG EAST Coaches' Poll… The BIG EAST Conference announced its 2019 Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Thursday, Aug. 8. The Friars were picked to finish third among 10 BIG EAST schools behind Georgetown and Butler. Providence finished last season ranked 47th nationally in RPI.
 
Redshirt junior Shelby Hogan highlighted Providence in the BIG EAST Preseason Awards. She was named BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year as well as being named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. McNulty also earned a spot on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team after a stellar sophomore season. Hogan posted 10 total shutouts in 2018 to tie the program record for a single season, ranking her 12th among all Division I goalkeepers. She finished the season with a 0.77 goals against average, while playing all 1877:39 minutes for the Friars in net.
 
McNulty and Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.), the focal point of the Friars' offense, return for their junior seasons. The duo combined to score 16 of the team's 26 goals a season ago. McNulty finished third in the BIG EAST in goals (10) and tied for second in the BIG EAST in game-winning goals (four) with Birchwell. Birchwell sent the Friars to the BIG EAST Semifinal after scoring the lone goal against St. John's in the team's 1-0 win in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal.
 
Newcomers… The Friars welcome six freshmen and four transfers to the 2019 squad. Incoming freshmen include Sam Murray (Medway, Mass.), Chloe Ortolano (Norwalk, Conn.), Alexis Rothmann (Norwell, Mass.), Angie Suaza (Nashua, N.H.), Lisa Verhoeven (Bunde, Netherlands) and Ava Brandt (Chester, N.J.). Katelyn Vieira (Warwick, R.I.) will use her last season of eligibility after transferring from UMass-Lowell, Kristen Parry (Acton, Mass.) joins Providence as a sophomore who began her career at South Carolina, Mara Rodriguez (Rochester, N.Y.) comes to Providence after one season at West Virginia and Jana Braun (Frittlingen, Germany) enters the 2019 season as a junior after two seasons at Gardner-Webb.
 
Series History Against Georgetown… Providence holds a 3-12-3 overall record against the Georgetown Hoyas. The team has posted a 2-1-2 record over the last five matches and last time at The Chap on Oct. 15, 2017 the Friars upset No. 15 Georgetown, 1-0.
 
Scouting the Hoyas… Georgetown enters the match with a 7-2-1 overall record. The team is currently ranked No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Hoyas boast a 6-1 record at home and 2-1-1 record on the road. The team is currently on a six-game winning streak defeating Lafayette, Princeton, West Virginia, Ohio, Marquette and Villanova. The team has outscored its opponents, 23-4, over its last six games and has posted four consecutive shutouts.

Up Next… Providence will host DePaul in the team's fourth BIG EAST matchup of the season on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m.
