Volleyball Falls To Butler In Four Sets

Addison Root registered her 1000th career kill along with her seventh double-double of the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team fell to Butler, 3-1, on Sunday, Oct. 10 in Providence, R.I. Butler took the first set, 25-20, before Providence battled to win the second set, 26-24. Butler finished the match by winning the third and fourth set (25-18, 25-16). The Friars fall to 5-16 (0-8 BIG EAST) while the Bulldogs improve to 8-12 (5-3 BIG EAST).
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: The beginning of the set opened with Butler going on a 4-1 run. Providence would counter with a 5-0 run to take the lead early in the set (6-4). The Bulldogs regained the lead after going on a pivotal 7-1 run (11-7). The Friars came within two, 15-13, but the Bulldogs held the Friars off throughout the remainder of the set. Butler took the first set, 25-20.
 
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) had a team-highs four kills on nine total attacks, a hitting percentage of .444 and four digs.
 
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) led the Friars with nine assists and two digs.
 
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) tallied four digs.
 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars came out of the break strong, opening the set with a 7-3 run. The Bulldogs fought back with a 5-1 run to tie it at eight. The set would go back and forth with 10 ties and two lead changes. Providence held strong and won the set, 26-24.
 
Root registered six kills on 15 total attacks.
 
Barber recorded 11 assists and three digs.
 
Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) tied for a set-high eight digs.
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Butler began the set on a 7-3 run. After the Friars took the first point, the Bulldogs held the lead for the whole set. The Bulldogs won the third set, 25-18.
 
Mullally tallied three kills on ten total attacks.
 
Barber had team-highs with seven assists and six digs.
 
Root recorded six digs.
 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: After a back and forth start to the set, Butler went on a 13-4 run to break the 9-9 tie and create separation in the set (22-13). The Bulldogs won the set, 25-16.
 
Mullally led the Friars with three kills on five total attacks and four digs.
 
Barber paced the Friars with six assists. 
 
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
 
Root tallied her 1000th career kill in the third set. Root finished the match with a team-high 14 kills on 47 total attacks and 14 digs. This marked her seventh double-double of the season.
 
Barber claimed her 17th double-double of the season with 33 assists and 13 digs.
 
Five Friars tallied double-digit digs. Mullally had a team-high 17 digs.
 
As a team, the Friars recorded 42 kills on 154 total attacks, 81 digs, 41 assists and five team blocks.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: Providence welcomes No. 11 Creighton for two match ups at Alumni Hall. The Friars will play the Blue Jays on Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
