Field Hockey Set To Face No. 3 Connecticut And New Hampshire This Weekend

Friars start weekend on the road against the third-ranked Huskies on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College field hockey team will travel to Storrs, Conn. on Friday, Oct. 11 to face No 3 Connecticut in BIG EAST regular-season play at 3:00 p.m. The Friars will return home to Lennon Family Field on Sunday, Oct. 13 to host New Hampshire in a non-conference match at 1:00 p.m.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
• Providence enters the weekend with a 7-4 overall record, including victories in three of its last four games.
• Each of the Friars' four losses have come against teams who have been ranked in the national poll at one point during the season.
• Providence is 1-3 vs. nationally-ranked opponents this season, with its lone victory coming against then-No. 24 Maine, 5-4, in overtime on Sept. 1. The Friars fell to No. 13 Boston College (2-1), No. 22 Old Dominion (4-3, 2OT/SO) and No. 6 Louisville (2-0). Providence also fell to Fairfield, 2-1, on Sept. 22 and the Stags moved into the national poll the following week at No. 23.
• The Friars are currently tied for third in the BIG EAST standings with a 2-1 conference mark, having defeated Temple (1-0) and Villanova (3-1). The Friars fell to then-No. 22 Old Dominion, 4-3, in a match decided by a shootout on Sept. 20.
• Senior Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) leads the Friars' offense with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Sophomore Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) is second on the team in scoring with nine points on four goals and one assist.
• Ten different players have scored goals for the Friars this season, including six players with two-or-more goals.
• Senior Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) is third on the team in scoring with eight points on two goals and a team-best four assists.
• Graduate student Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) has played 705 minutes in the cage for Providence and has recorded a 1.28 goals against average and a .727 save percentage. She has been the goalkeeper of record for each match (7-4) and has posted four shut-out victories.
• Providence College ranks sixth in the nation among NCAA Division I programs in penalty corners per game (7.91). The Friars are one of three BIG EAST teams ranked in the top-7 in the nation in this category: Villanova (4th, 8.50) and Connecticut (7th, 7.83).
• Last season, Connecticut defeated Providence, 3-0, at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Huskies held the advantage in shots (12-4), shots on goal (7-2) and penalty corners (7-2). UConn scored two of its three goals on corners during the game. All three of Connecticut's goals came in the first half, as it opened the first 35 minutes of play with eight shots and five corners.
• Head Coach Diane Madl is a 1989 graduate of Connecticut, where she was a two-time All-American and helped the Huskies win the NCAA title in 1985. In 1989, Madl earned the Honda Broderick Award as the nation's top field hockey player.
• The Friars defeated New Hampshire, 2-1, in the most recent meeting between the two teams on Sept. 7, 2018 in Durham, N.H. Maddie Babineau (Milton, Ontario) and Mendez each scored for Providence, while Lydia Rice made five saves in goal.
SCOUTING CONNECTICUT:
• UConn enters the weekend with a 10-2 overall record, including a 3-0 mark in the BIG EAST.
• The Huskies have two players on the roster that have eclipsed the 20-point mark, led by Svea Boker, who owns 26 points on 11 goals and four assists. Sophie Hamilton has registered 20 points on six goals and a team-best eight assists.
• Cheyenne Sprecher has played 712 minutes in the cage and owns a 0.93 goals against average and a 0.836 save percentage.
• Connecticut has out-shot its opponents, 225-98, through 12 games and has recorded 94 penalty corners, while giving up just 40 offensive corners to its opponents.

• New Hampshire enters the weekend with a 6-5 overall record and will face No. 21 Albany on Friday, Oct. 10 before making its way to Providence College.
• The Wildcats are 1-3 this season against nationally-ranked opponents, with its lone victory coming against then-No. 18 Stanford, 3-2, on Sept. 13 in Durham, N.H.
• UNH defeated UMass, 2-1, in its most recent game on Oct. 6 in Amherst, Mass. Finn Caron scored the game-winning goal with 2:04 left in the fourth quarter.
• Caron leads the Wildcats' offense in points (21), goals (nine) and assists (three). Kayla Sliz is second on the team in scoring with eight points on three goals and two assists.
• Jemma Woods has played 562 minutes in goal this season and owns a 6-3 record. She has posted a 2.35 goals against average and a .672 save percentage. Rachel Simkevich has logged 110 minutes in goal with a 4.35 goals against average and .636 save percentage. Simkevich has seen action in five games overall and owns a 0-2 record, with losses to American and Maryland.

The match on Sunday vs. New Hampshire is the start of a five-game home stand for the Friars. The program returns to action on Friday, Oct. 18 against BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac at 6:00 p.m. Providence will close the weekend with a non-conference game against Merrimack on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1:00 p.m. The match against Merrimack will serve as the program's Youth Day and will feature a promotional giveaway.
