STORRS, CONN.– The Providence College field hockey team fell to third-ranked Connecticut, 3-0, in BIG EAST Conference action on Friday, Oct. 11 in Storrs, Conn. The Friars dropped to 7-5 overall (2-2 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 11-2 (4-0 BIG EAST).
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
• After a scoreless first quarter, UConn managed to take a 1-0 lead at the 23:55 mark of the second quarter. Maddy Wray was credited with the goal, unassisted.
• The Friars trailed 1-0 at halftime as UConn held a 7-5 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in penalty corners.
• UConn added a second goal in the third quarter at 40:56 on an effort from Sophie Hamilton.
• In the fourth quarter, the Huskies went ahead 3-0 as Erica Solomen converted a back-handed attempt at the cage.

Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) and
Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) had two excellent chances to find the back of the cage with just under six minutes left in regulation, but UConn's Cheyenne Sprecher turned away both attempts.
• Providence earned its first penalty corner with 1:31 left in the match. Mendez fired a shot from the top of the circle, but it was saved by Sprecher and cleared out of the circle by the UConn defense.
• Mendez got loose in the offensive third of the field in the final seconds and was denied at the doorstep by Sprecher for her eighth save of the game.
• UConn held the advantage in shots (19-13), shots on goal (9-8) and penalty corners (6-1).

Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) made six saves for Providence, while Sprecher came up big for UConn in the victory with eight saves to collect a shutout.
