Men’s Soccer Visits Butler

This is the Friars’ second BIG EAST contest of the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team returns to BIG EAST play with a Saturday, Sept. 22 matchup at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m. at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl.

Scouting the Bulldogs
Butler enters Saturday's match with a 1-4-1 overall record and a 0-1-0 mark in BIG EAST play. The Bulldogs fell, 3-0, to No. 25 Creighton in their BIG EAST season opener on Sept. 15. The team's best results have come against ranked opponents, as Butler tied then-No. 4 Akron, 2-2, and defeated then-No. 16 Western Michigan, 2-0. Brandon Guhl, last year's BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year and this season's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, leads the team in scoring. He has eight points on three goals and two assists. Derek Sutton, Louie Bulger and Eric Hollenkamp are the only other Bulldogs with goals.
 
In goal, freshman Gabriel Gjergji has started all six games. He holds a 1.56 goals against average and a 0.706 save percentage.
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars fell to the Rhode Island Rams on Tuesday (Sept. 18) by a score of 3-0. Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) and Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal) led the team in shots with three apiece. The appearance was Santos' first of his career at Providence. Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.) made two saves in the match before Tony Billeri (Cumberland, R.I.) took over in net in the 72nd minute. He made two saves and did not allow a goal in his first action of the season.
 
Mendonca leads the Friars in goals (four) and points (eight). Chisholm has three points, while Malcolm Duncan (Toronto, Ontario), Alex DaCosta (Bristol, R.I.) and Matt DePerro (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) each have two. Duncan has two assists while DaCosta and DePerro have each scored a goal. In net, Miller holds a 1.44 goals against average and a .676 save percentage.
 
Stacking Up Against the BIG EAST
Providence currently leads the BIG EAST in corner kicks. The Friars have 50 corners through eight games, averaging 6.25 per game. Providence is also second in shots in the BIG EAST, with 13.88 per game.
 
In terms of individuals, Tiago Mendonca ranks tied for second in the league in goals and tied for fourth in points. Colin Miller ranks tied for third in saves made with 25.
 
One-Goal Games
Through eight games, five of the Friars' contests have been decided by just one goal. Three of those five have been wins, including recent 1-0 victories over UAlbany (Sept. 7) and George Washington (Sept. 9).
 
Fresh Friar Faces
The Friars' roster features ten newcomers for the 2018 season. Six of the ten have seen action for the Friars. Ramzi Qawasmy (Landsdale, Pa.) has started all eight games at center back, totaling 757 minutes on the season. Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.) has also seen significant minutes, making his first start against Harvard (Sept. 3). He recorded his first career point on an assist against Boston College (Aug. 31).
 
Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.), Raimondo Partito (Philadelphia, Pa.), Christopher Roman (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal) have each come off the bench for the Friars. Chisholm notched his first assist (Sept. 7) and first goal (Sept. 9) in one weekend of action.
