Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreak To Penn State In Season Opener, 74-72

Friars will host Quinnipiac on Nov. 15 at Alumni Hall.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.– The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Penn State, 74-72, in University Park, Pa. to open the 2018-19 season on Nov. 8.
 
The Friars went on a 10-1 run to finish the first quarter and take a 30-21 lead at the break.  Providence hit six three pointers in the opening 10 minutes and Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) led the scoring with 11 points. Providence was solid defensively during their run, holding the Nittany Lions without a made field goal in the final 3:12 of play.
 
Providence cooled off in the second quarter, but held form on the defensive side of the ball, forcing seven Nittany Lion turnovers in a span of 5:28 to hold on to a 36-25 advantage. Penn State closed the second quarter with an 11-4 scoring advantage to get within 40-36 at halftime.
 
The Friars outscored Penn State, 17-9, in points off of turnovers, having forced PSU into 14 first-half miscues.  Providence shot 43-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes on 16-37 shooting, including 6-14 from three-point territory (43-percent).  The Friars dished 12 assists on its 16 made field goals in the half.
 
Nogic was held scoreless in the second quarter, but went to the locker room with a team-best 11 points. Freshman Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) came off the bench in her collegiate debut and tallied eight points in the first half.  Senior Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) added seven points.
 
The Friars started the third quarter with a 13-4 scoring advantage to a 53-40 lead with 6:16 remaining on the clock.  Providence gained its largest advantage of the game with 3:48 on the clock (57-42) on a free throw from Webb, and held a 63-51 edge heading into the final quarter. Sophomore guard Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) went coast-to-coast with 4.6-seconds left on the clock to end the stanza.
 
The Nittany Lions charged in the fourth quarter, outscoring Providence 23-9.  PSU hit two free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining in the game to take a 74-72 lead.  Providence called timeout to advance the ball and draw up a final play.  Freshman Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) received the inbound pass and converted a lay-up, but after an official review, they waved off the bucket and Penn State took the win.
 
Nogic paced the Friars with 18 points and Webb added 15 points, two assists and two steals. Williams and Jolin each tallied 10 point for Providence.
 
Providence returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 15 against Quinnipiac. The game will be played at Alumni Hall / Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and will tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
